Not true

Newton was a 5* QB in HS

4* composite

Newton was an elite QB even before he came to AU

He was good but not elite. He wasn't even a lock to win the starting job over Barrett Trotter. Gus took him to the next level.

Cam Newton shouldn't count as credit for Gus. He didn't develop him into an elite QB. Newton was an elite QB even before he came to AU. He was on campus for less than a year. Newton was a 5* QB in HS, All-American in JUCO, and the no.1 JUCO player (only 5* JUCO player) when he was recruited by Auburn.

I bet you use this same logic when touting alabama's # of NFL players under saban.

Those Bama players are on campus for 3-5 years, while Newton was at Auburn for barely a year since he was a one and done JUCO player. In 3-5 years, a player can be developed into being much better by the coaches. But in just ONE off-season/ spring and fall practices only so much developing can be done. Gus deserves some credit for Newton and he did use him right but most of the credit should go to Newton since he was already a great player to begin with. Same could be said for guys like Cooper and Julio for Bama.

with how dirty recruiting has gotten I would not be surprised at all if he was instructed to say this by Louisville's coaches

The very fact that this entire thread has turned into a Cam Newton thread is a perfect summation of the entire premise I started the thread with.

Auburn does not develop NFL talent or prepare them for the NFL. Cam Newton is an outlier who has spent more time learning from Mike Shula than he did Gus.

All of the pages full of deflections about Alabama QBs and touting Cam Newton are completely irrelevant - as it has nothing to do with the fact that there is a very real perception (at the very least a very real and apparently effective negative recruiting tactic) that Auburn does not prepare players for the next level.

Add in the fact that Remington Trophy winner Reese Dismukes wasn't even valued enough to be picked in the 7th round, and it's apparent what NFL teams think of players coming out of Auburn.

There's no basis for this argument at all.

Dismukes didn't have the physical attributes for a higher pick. Plus, he was a center. The NFL seemed to feel OK about Greg Robinson.
