S&P Explosiveness rankings
2015
#81 - Tennessee
#123 - Auburn
2016
#102 - Auburn
#112 - Tennessee
Both Auburn and Tennessee have Top 25 defenses and good running backs. Tennessee has a decent QB and Auburn has a decent OL. However, neither one can do anything explosive. Having to go on 10-12 play drives to score touchdowns is insanely difficult to do in this conference.
That's the main reason I think Auburn has to give Franklin a shot. White isn't a terrible QB, but their only shot to get more explosive is to have Franklin playing. It may backfire and he may turn it over 5 times, but at this point it is their only shot.

If we only had a serviceable oline. It's unreal how badly they've regressed

Even then, Tennessee still has big play issues. Dobbs can't throw the deep ball consistently and Hurd can't break big runs. Basically the only big play threats are Dobbs running and Kamara. That's makes it tough, but obviously it is even tougher when you can't get small chunks of yards either. That is not a good combination.

I'm really liking what the true freshman Byrd is starting to show. The kid is fast and plays a lot like Pig - only faster. Hopefully the playbook is wide open this weekend and our O-line tightens up a bit.

It's hard to get explosive plays when you refuse to let your QB throw the ball further than 5 yards down the field.

But do you think Auburn's path to more big plays is Sean White just throwing the ball down the field? Teams don't respect him as a runner. That seems (to me at least) to totally tear down a key element of Gus' plan.
Even though it was late in the game, A&M clearly had to change their defensive strategy to account for Franklin. That opened up the middle and gave him vastly larger spaces to throw into.

I think Sean could produce explosive plays through the air, but I don't think Gus will let him do anything other than throw screens or short out routes.

My problem with that is, why can other teams have a successful pocket passing QB, but we can't?

My guess would be because 75% of Auburn's plays (maybe more), involve at least the eye candy threat of the QB/RB option. Part of getting all those guys open is the linebacker/defensive lineman/safety thinking somewhere in the back of his brain that the QB COULD run.
Gus doesn't have a whole lot of play action roll out, drop back passes in his system. So, when every throw is based off of the QB/RB play, your QB not being a threat is a pretty huge deal. Auburn's playbook just isn't built on a 3 step drop or even shotgun snaps and throws. It's built on deception.

Tennessee used all their gunpowder on those prank exploding eyebrows. Not very practical but it was worth it.

Tennessee, UA cannot wait to come to your home field, All this bragging how UT was going to drop bama like a bad habit, I will guarantee you at the end of the game Alabama will be smoking Cigars. It's going to be bad we have a QB able to run better than Dobbs besides when he gets ready to run It's going to look like he has ben hit by a peterbuilt loaded with a hundred Thousand pounds.
