if you plan to tailgate, bring a tent for shade. there isn't a mother fricking tree on the entire campus

There's a tree and a black guy. Any other rumors you need me to disprove?

And sorry that our oaks are post oaks and smaller than your live oaks and water oaks

To be fair, there are very few trees in the tailgating areas on West Campus.

You will enjoy it, A&M is a truly unique place. The folks who are comparing it to StarkVegas are downright hilarious. Starkville has a population of 22k. B/CS has a population of 220k. It's also an hour away from the 4th largest city in the US. You also CAN WALK ON THE GRASS. There is only ONE place on the campus you can't and that is the Memorial Student Center (MSC) grounds which is a memorial and is a very small area.

I can also assure you that any LSU or Arkie folks that came there the last time we played will hardly recognize it. The population and city have exploded in the last 20 years and the campus is completely transformed. I am a Class of '93 and every time I go back I am continually blown away by it. For instance 20 years ago the tailgating was almost non existent, there were about 30% of the restaurants that are there now, there was also almost nowhere to eat on and around campus on gamedays. All of that has changed.

Northgate is the best known bar area with the Dixie Chicken, Duddley's Draw, and Bottle Cap Alley. The area is very C&W/Texas in feel. The Tap is a very cool bar that has a more traditional college feel to it. Hurricane Harry's is a fun Dance bar as is the Texas Hall of Fame.

My personal favorite places to eat are Koppe Bridge which has great burgers and BBQ, J Cody's which has fantastic BBQ and possibly the best seasoned ribeye steaks I have ever eaten, Freebirds for their famous custom burritos, Layne's for their famous chicken fingers and incredible and unique dipping sauce, and DoubleDave's Pizza with their famous pepperoni rolls.

The campus itself is massive with over 5000 acres, simply driving around it takes a good while on a gameday. There is a lot to see. There is an excellent tailgating atmosphere now that simply didn't exist 20 years ago. Aggies are very friendly to outsiders and you will likely be offered beer and food quite liberally. There is also a set of local restaurants that have food booths set up right outside Kyle if you prefer. Some big features on campus include the Bush Presidential Library (that's Bush 41) which is a pretty incredible interactive museum on the edge of campus. You need a couple hours to truly see it but it is well worth it. The Memorial Student Center (MSC) is currently under renovation but will be done by next Fall. One feature that is really worthwhile to see there is all 7 Medals of Honor earned by Aggies. The Corps of Cadets Museum is also very interesting and a quick view, it also houses a pretty fantastic exotic gun collection if you like firearms. The Corps dorms themselves are pretty cool to check out 2 hours before the game as the 2k Corps members form up, they fire off the 1903 Howitzer (you can hear it half a mile away), and they all march in to the stadium behind the band. It's pretty cool to see. The Bonfire Memorial is also a very powerful monument unlike any other and worth seeing. Of course if you come in the night before don't miss Midnight Yell Practice which is held at Kyle and has 35-40k folks coming out to practice yells and listen to stories by the Yell Leaders, it's unlike anything you will ever see and really can give you an idea of what A&M is all about.

One other thing, whatever you do at the game DO NOT MISS THE AGGIE BAND. Nothing else like it.

We treat our guests at A&M generally very well in Aggieland and want you to enjoy your stay. There may be an occasional moron but Aggies try hard to police our own. Now after a few years as the rivalries build it will likely get more heated (esp with LSU) but right now anyone wearing the colors of another SEC school on the A&M campus will be treated like a long lost friend. We can't wait for SEC football!

To add on to aggressors post, and depending on your proclivities, There are two routs to take:

1. Park on the northeast side of campus (Texas Ave and University Blvd), walk north to Northgate and hit the Chicken, etc, then walk South thru campus about an hour and a half or so before kickoff to the Quad, to see the Corps march-in start. Don't stand near the canon, it'll bust your ears. Then head toward Kyle Field and stop by the Corps museum, MSC, etc. They'll have Reveille In the MSC for photos if you have kids.

Cont'd

Then head over to the game and plan on staying in your seat the whole game, including half-time. Nobody leaves, they all stay to watch the bands.

Or if your thing is tailgating and suds.

Get there early and park Southwest of campus in a a pay lot, and head over toward West campus (west of the tracks). Don't worry about bringing anything, just walk buy as many Tailgates as you can and you'll be handed food and drinks. Aggies are gracious hosts and will take good care of you. There are barbecue pits, couches, satellites with big screens everywhere, so you'll be able to find whatever you like. Post on TexAgs looking for a tailgate to host you and you'll get tons of offers. Then about 30-45 minutes before kick-off head East under the pedestrian tunnel to Kyle.

LOL at some of the responses... sounds like some of you haven't been to CS in 20 years...

Here's a write up I did for the Idaho radio guys earlier this year for their fans.

quote:

I'll outline Restaurants, Bars and the sights then breakdown how a typical game weekend goes for my crew.

Before I start, a few landmarks I should point out. Northgate is the largest Bar District in town. About 25-30 bars on University Avenue that backs up to Campus. About a mile walk from Kyle Field. Main Campus is where Kyle Field is. West Campus is across Wellborn Road which is home to tens of thousands of tailgaters on Gameday. Spence Park is the park right next to your visitors section and has thousands of tailgaters on gameday.

Restaurants/Local Eateries that I like:

Freebirds - Monster Burritos that you make yourself. On Northgate

La Bodega - Great Baja tacos and tex-mex on Northgate.

Cafe Eccell - A little higher end, but wonderful food and award winning desserts on Northgate.

Kyoto Sushi -- Northgate

Antonio's Pizza - Boston Style Pizza on Northgate

Zapatos on Northgate -- Trash Can Nachos.... nuff said

Fuego -- 24 hour taco service -- drunk food, but wonderful, lots of tail running around here at 3 am.

Republic Steakhouse -- If you want an expensive dinner but really good steak, try here.

C & J's BBQ -- Texas BBQ

Rudy's BBQ -- See above

Koppe Bridge -- Best Burgers in town and the beer is ICE cold

Bars (most on Northgate):

Corner Bar -- 3 story bar with a rooftop bar on Northgate

Dixie Chicken -- Staple of Northgate that sells an arse ton of beer per square foot (Northgate)

Dry Bean Shot Saloon -- 250 shots on menu (Northgate)

Schotzi's -- Live Music outside and inside on Northgate

Zapatos -- Live Music on the porch, good margaritas on Northgate

Barber Shots -- Shot bar next to Zapatos on Northgate

Daisy Dukes -- Dancing, young college girls in basically nothing on Northgate

OBannons -- Irish Pub with 100 beers available on Northgate

Paddock Lane -- Low key, good service on Northgate

Tipsy Turtle -- Daquiri Bar New Orleans Style on Northgate

Fitzwillys -- two story live music venue, cheap drinks on Northgate

Duddleys Draw -- Front and back porch with cheap drinks

315 Shot Bar -- Like Dry Bean on Northgate

Madhatters -- 80s bar with a back porch and tall beers on Northgate

Basil Whippets -- Apothecary Lounge (two story) on Northgate

Logans -- Sports bar with 44 oz. beers on Northgate

V Bar -- more greek crowd, dancing

Gatsbys -- dancing, small (on Northgate)

Hookah Lounge -- hookah bar that serves booze on Northgate

Hurricane Harrys -- Country Dancing on Northgate

The Tap -- my favorite bar not on Northgate (Harvey Road)... cheap drinks, good food

The Hall -- Country Dancing on Hwy 2818... cheap drinks

Fox and Hound -- Tons of beers on tap on University Drive

Carneys -- On South College on Bryan/College Station Line

Random Sights of College Station:

George Bush Sr. Library -- On West Campus

Bonfire Memorial -- On Main Campus (pretty emotional memorial for those of us who were in school when the 12 students died in 1999).

Golf:

Traditions Country Club (Home of Texas A&M Golf -- 2009 National Champions)

Miramont Country Club (Private, but can drive by it... Robert Trent Jones Course... Beautiful!)

Tailgating/Gameday:

Our crew usually arrives around 7 am and we tailgate in Lot 100 on the Southeast side of Reed Arena. I've attached the parking map. If you guys want to do an all day thing before going over to your Idaho tailgate at Duncan Field, I suggest Reed Arena or Spence Park. You won't be able to park at Reed, but across the street is the WCG (West Campus Parking Garage). You can drop your stuff off on the curb at Reed and set up in the grass with everyone else, but you'll have to park in the garage. It is $15. Don't park in the green cash lots way out on West Campus. Its a long walk or shuttle and its for the few folks who come in and out.

Reed Arena - Largest concentration of tailgaters. West Campus. Party Buses, RVs, large tailgate spreads with TVs, beer pong, bands, etc.

Spence Park - Large concentration of tailgaters on the East side of Kyle Field. Lots of fun, mostly a younger crowd.

Duncan Field - Where your alumni tailgate is... also the same place that the Fraternities and Sororities tailgate.

Stepoff/Band march-in takes place 1.5 hour before the game. If you're at Duncan or Spence you will be able to see them march into the stadium. Pretty cool experience if you haven't seen it before.

Parking Map: LINK

Duncan Field is in pink at the bottom. My tailgating lot is 100g (Lot E) by Reed. Feel free to come by. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you my contact info.

If you have any other questions, I'm here to help out.

I didn't even mention the numerous bars and restaurants in revamped Downtown Bryan and South College Station because its more of the older crowds.

I'd also suggest staying at Messina Hof winery which is 10 miles from campus.

It sits up high on a bluff and is a great place to stay and the menu is great.
