The answer is because Arky is like Ole Miss at least in this context and they look at LSU as one of their main rivals.
I respect Arkansas, and definitely now look to that game as a meaningful/important game, but I have never considered Arkansas a rival. Could that change in the future? Maybe, but it's not there yet IMO. Bama, Auburn, Florida games all mean more to me in terms of a "rivalry game" than Arky. Arky game hasn't reached that yet, and it may never reach that, who knows.
And FWIW, the reasoning above is probably why LSU has so many problems with Arkansas in recent history. Along with our fans, it's human nature that our team doesn't put Arkansas in that group of games that get circled before the season start. And quite honestly, it might be time that we - as a program and as fans - start circling that game.

It is an important game when LSU is ranked. Just like it would be with any other team.

Oh, I get that, and by no means is my post/reasoning any kind of a slam on Arkansas. It just is what it is. It's just logical when in general LSU is typically at the #1 slot of most Razorback's list of main SEC rivals, and Arky is #3 or #4 on most LSU fan's list of main rivals.
It's quite simple IMO: LSU is a bigger rival of Arkansas than Arkansas is of LSU.
LSU has the same dynamic with Bama. Most LSU fans put Bama as our main rival (especially with Saban there now, but even before then as well), whereas most Bama fans wouldn't even put LSU in the top2. LSU is actually quite familiar with the situation Arkansas is in: not having a true SEC rival. Ever since Ole Miss tanked, we're exactly like Arkansas in that sense. That's why the SEC hoped the LSU-Arky game would take off and mold itself into a "rivalry" game ... that's just never happenned the way they hoped.

i wouldn't label it an "infatuation", but i do sense the LSU game is very big for central ar., and so. ar. hog fans in particular...not saying it's not that way for the nwa folks. just saying it seems to be extra spicy for certain parts of the state.
the game is in l'rock and that contributes, no doubt. i think the fact that some north la. tv stations bleed over into some areas of so. ar stokes it as well. that and it's the last reg. game of the yr. for both (as others have mentioned), and usually there is more meaning to the game than just that god awful David Bazzel pile of contemptuous hardware.
just my 2 cents.

i just find it odd that only my arky friends will call me to rub it in my face that arky beat lsu in any sport. all my friends at the other schools don't, and the more i read this board it just looks like obsession.

Probably because that part of the state is now home to a ton of Katrina evacuees. That part of the state has become home to a lot of LSU fans since Katrina.
They all work together and have probably become friends.

prolly so. although, i think a lot of this lsu/arky banter/hype/rivarly (manufactored or not) existed pre-2005.
it's gotten exposed a little more lately, primarily because of Arky's success against LSU lately, i think.

The reason it is discussed so much on this board is because arky never beats any top ranked teams except lsu. So anytime some one clowns arky their defense mechanism is to bring up they beat lsu.
It is their only real accomplishment. The reason there are no hog fans with lsu in their sig is because there are no arky fans in Louisiana. They convert to lsu fans so they can know what it feels like to win championships.

Huh? I wouldn't call it 'obsessed'. 99.99% of Hog fans don't really care what you think about us, or whether we have your 'approval' or 'respect'. We'd rather kick your arse and have you hate us.
