When I was a student, I lived in a pretty crappy 2 bedroom that was a block from campus for $425. That was a few years ago.
On the other hand, there are extremely nice 500 sq ft one bedrooms going for $800-1000.
There's quite a bit of variety.

If you're going to rent.. do it in a state that has an income tax.. otherwise you pay out the arse in rent because of property taxes.
