It varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction but drug court is often an option for many non violent offenders ncluding those committing drug and property crimes. It certainly has grown more broad since its inception. Also, it is not just for first time offenders as I've had clients who have served time in prison get into drug court.
In one jurisdiction I'm in a lot they use regular probation for most first time non violent felony offenders which is not as intensive as drug court. There, drug court is actually reserved for those who have been in trouble before and they go into the drug court program as kind of a last shot to get straight or they wind up in prison.
In a nutshell it doesn't sound like he received a disposition out of the norm or was given preferential treatment as a player.

bro the last 20 years our program has been frickin terrible. I understand we're still a better program all-time but tbh it's not that big of a margin. And at this pace, Florida will over take us very soon.
