Yeah, that was a "lack of institutional control" that got us a 1-year TV ban and NO BOWL in a year we most likely would have won the NC.
You were 10-0-1 that year. Nebraska and Penn State were both undefeated. You guys wouldn't have sniffed the national championship that year.

Thanks for your opinion, stated as fact.

oh ok. so you think you would have won the national championship over an undefeated Nebraska or Penn State?
Posted on 9/27/12 at 12:46 pm to Haughton99
No clue. Unlike you, I don't have a time machine to re-visit events that never occurred.
But I wouldn't characterize the situation as "never sniffed it."

It would have been a hell of a lot easier to take every game seriously when it actually had meaning, instead of a TV-less, Bowl-less outcome, you think?

Me either. I'm not the one that stated that the bowl ban was the reason you guys didn't win the NC. That was another Aggie. I have no doubt that A&M would have finished higher than 8th in the polls if they would have been able to play in a Bowl game. But that game would not have been for the National Championship. There were two Powerhouse teams with no losses or ties. I don't need a time machine to know that they would have won the championship over a team that tied SMU that season.

Maybe. Maybe not. Again, your opinion (which I enjoyed reading).

The quote is from the link posted regarding A&M's violations ... does anyone else find this comment extremely ironic?
I bet Jackie does.

I was thinking the same thing when I read it. He made this quote while Sandusky was on his staff.

Wow.
But I guess leaving kids in the hands of university-protected child molesters was the ethical thing to do, eh, JoePa???
I'd like to know what some of you Aggies think of the way RC Slocum's exit from A&M was handled.
He seemed to be such a good man- I sincerely hated to see him go out the way he did. I also believe that he largely ran a clean program- and had quite a mess to deal with when he took over, IMHO.
On a side note, I have family in Orange, TX where he grew up...One of my uncles knew him pretty well from their younger days.

When RC left it was very divisive. You had Ags on all sides, of course it got worse because RC certainly didn't go quietly.
In the end though the program was in decline and had been in decline for a while. RC blamed it on lack of facilities which had merit, what he didn't do was take responsibility for that. He was a very reactive coach that didn't adjust well to change. He absolutely hated the internet and thought it was the devil for instance. He would seriously yell and scream because some poster somewhere said something negative about him or the team and would blame that as a reason for why he couldn't recruit. Mack Brown and Bob Stoops just blew by him with better facilities and changing the game. For instance RC would always just wait until a big recruiting weekend he had a few weeks before signing day assuming he would just get who he wanted. Mack went out and worked it and got his classes committed early and by the time RC's weekend came along the best fruit was long gone.
RC's other big issue was he expected to be treated as though he was Bear Bryant or Bobby Bowden as though he had been the savior of A&M football. That attitude did not sit well with many and the fact that he never won a New Year's Day Bowl game, much less a NC, created an even bigger rift. His teams also had a nasty habit of falling asleep and blowing games that cost them big. In '91 he probably had his best team with a defense that was #1 in the country by about 50 yards a game and yet he blew a game to Tulsa early that ended up costing A&M a shot at a NC. In '96 he lost a game to ULaLa. His teams always seemed unprepared for bowl games and he never won a significant one. He also blew the '98 Texas game which had he won A&M may have gotten in the NC picture after beating KSU the following week. He was a lesser version of what Mark Richt is to UGA fans, at least Richt has won some BCS bowls.
The real death of RC though was that '02 season. He had a team that was very talented and set up for a big run and choked away game after game very reminiscent of last year. To me the worst was when he blew an 18 point lead late to Tech at Kyle when he inexplicably went into a prevent defense against a Mike Leach team with almost a quarter to play. We ended up actually losing the game on a missed XP at the end of the game followed by a missed XP in OT, 48-47. He lost to NU in similar form except he had a huge lead and they somehow were able to run the ball to catch up. Then after his bright and shining moment beating OU he loses to a very mediocre Mizzou team. By the time Texas destroyed us in Austin he was done.
There is also no way you can say that RC "inherited a mess". He was the DC for Sherrill and got a team that had won 3 of the last 4 SWC titles and was stocked with talent. In '87 (the year before he took over) A&M had the #1 Class in the country by a mile lead by Darren Lewis and Randy Simmons. Simmons screwed up his knee and was never the same but Lewis broke the SWC all time rushing record. Those teams were also LOADED with defensive talent. A&M had a streak for about 10 years where every LB that started for us made an NFL roster.
RC was a class guy (except for his own Petrino esque escapade in '96 where he even had his mistress show up at the practice field). He also had a personality that fit the school very well and he was a truly great defensive coach. I don't begrudge him at all and appreciate all he did. There is no doubt in my mind though that his time had passed and he was never going to compete with Stoops and Mack on a regular basis.

to get back to the original topic of the post, I would prefer everyone this year sleep on A&M...we typically thrive in the underdog role.

Not sure I am qualified to answer as my freshman year was RC's last. It was definitely a rough year. Lots of lows (Tech) and some enormous highs (Reggie McNeal running past #1 OU)
I can tell you that, as the brother of a TCU Horned Frog, I was super excited when we nabbed Franchione but knowing what we know now I would have preferred to keep RC.
If I remember correctly Sumlin was the lead recruiter on Adrian Peterson and he was all set to come to A&M then RC was fired, Sumlin went to OU and the rest was history. I think with AD and a few years with Sumlin as the OC we could have gotten things back on track ... of course this is after the fact musing.

RC was the coach the whole of my stay. I hated to see him go down the way he did, but it was multiplied by the crap coach we got in his place. I was never a Fran fan.
RC failed to adapt to the early recruiting efforts of Mac and Texas, so he died on the vine.
RC is a cool customer, and I look back knowing I saw the best Aggie stretch as a student.
