Are NFL teams allowed to discriminate?

I think what Michael Sam did was very brave and respectful. I wish the guy a long and prosperous NFL career. The kid is a hell of an athlete. In a hypothetical situation, if all 32 franchises decided to not draft him (Hopefully this would never happen) because he is gay, would it be a legal matter? Would it be like deciding to not draft a guy because of personal problems. What he did was very honorable. I know this is a touchy subject, but I was thinking about this. What would the protocol be?

Why are people celebrating Sam being gay as if its something to be proud of?
No one cares if you like to take it up the butt or swallow swords. Keep you personal preferences to yourself and play football.

He probably should have waited until he was drafted.
He better be damn good though, because no pro team will put up with a media circus for a mediocre player.

Well it is called the "NFL Draft" not the franchise draft. I'm sure there is some clause about that.

The league can't force a team to draft someone.

True, but the league does have the right to punish any player they see fit. It's a pretty relatable subject IMO.

They need a reason to punish though.
Unless a GM came out and openly said "we didn't draft Sam bc he was gay." how could they prove what the intent was?

He's probably surrounded by people who are telling him how awesome he is right now. The downside will not come until he's struggling at the next level.

Are you serious? No it wouldn't be a legal matter. You can't force a team to draft a kid.
If a team doesn't want the kid because he's gay, they shouldn't have to take him. It's their team, they can do what they want with it. If you want to be a homophobe, you have the right to be.
If the media didn't blow this out of proportion, this wouldn't even be an issue with most NFL owners.

Also, any criticism he is getting is brought on by himself. His "look at me. im gay" is nothing more than a cry for attention

No, he could not sue. He couldnt prove that they refused to draft him because he is gay and even if he could, accommodation laws dont apply to the NFL and there are no NFL by-laws prohibiting teams from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation (only race).

Wouldnt matter, the league isnt bound by public accommodation laws. The only thing that could happen is the league could fine that franchise but with no rules about gay discrimination Im not sure how they'd justify it.

How would anyone know if it was bc he was gay? And if he wasn't drafted then it's because he wasn't good enough.
