Dodson has 3 interceptions to Smith's 0

Dodson has 4.5 sacks to Smith's 1

Dodson has 34 solo tackles to Smith's 29

You get the point

White is a great, great player but # of tackles is just about as dumb a metric for players as # of wins for a pitcher.

According to the "Tackles" logic, here are your best LBs in America

MOST TACKLES PER GAME
1. Khalil Hodge (Buffalo) (14.4 Tackle Per Game)
2. Frank Ginda (San Jose St) (14.4 TPG)
3. Joe Dineen Jr (Kansas) (12.8 TPG)

MOST SOLO TACKLES PER GAME
1. Joe Dineen Jr (Kansas) (8.2)
2. Frank Ginda (San Jose St) (8.1)
3. Tony Lashley (Idaho) (7.2)
3. Leighton Vander Esch (Boise St) (7.2)

There you go. Best LBs in America. Irrefutable evidence.

He hasn't played well enough to earn it to this point.

Do yall not follow college football?

D. White not in there somewhere is criminal. We'll see what happens for the real award.

Roquan has literally missed one tackle all year. He's been perfect in almost every way and is getting mid first round draft predictions.

What's a "smart" metric, then?

Tackles is fine to use as one of a bunch of things. But to making an open and shut argument based on # of tackles is stupid.

Tackles, # of missed tackles, explosive plays (FF, Sacks, TFL, Pass Break Ups, etc), tackles per opportunity.

Where can we see these? Some seem obscure and I'd like to see what White's numbers are for them.

Also, what is wrong with the guys you listed? I don't know the more obscure numbers for them either, but other than possibly quality of opponent, I don't think your implication that those guys obviously shouldn't be considered as some of the best LBs in the country is warranted. It's not like these awards are limited to SEC/P5 players.

Who decides when a tackle assist is credited to a player? Is it someone from the school? Seems like there could be a huge difference depending on how it is determined nd by whom.

Solo tackles are not subject to interpretation nor Possible inflation of numbers.

I think that it's pretty clear from a talent evaluation standpoint that the 3 best linebackers in America do not play for San Jose State, Idaho and Buffalo. That doesn't mean they aren't good players.

My overall point is people are just latching on to a stat that proves what they want to be proved, regardless of whether it is the end all be all. Tackles are a stat that is very reliant on the rest of your defense, both their style and their performance. You can only make a tackle when you are given an opportunity.

I don't think there is anything wrong with arguing Devin White should be an AA. He's playing like one. My problem is "White is better than Smith, look at the # of tackles, case closed". That's silly.

I was going to say this list is shite because it omitted Devin White, but then the list went ahead and said it for me by including this guy.

Probably a lot of different groups. Some are independent, and schools keep their own stats as well. You can choose which resource to use. As long as you stick to one, I doubt the subjective nature leans much in any one player's direction.

Eh, they can certainly be subjective. I'm sure every player has some solos that are documented as assists because some other player got a hand on the ball carrier, even if they weren't needed.
