I don't follow softball and am glad she is going to be OK, but shouldn't they have pitchers wearing protective gear on their heads? Something?

Some do but most choose to not wear it. The same could be said for major league baseball. I know of one major leaguer that wears it and he said he doesn't care what it looks like or what people think about it. He has gotten used to it.

Damn you fear that in baseball and in softball and after seeing this at your link it's even scarier for softball pitchers:

"The distance between the pitcher's circle and home plate is just 43 feet, as opposed to 60 feet that separates the mound from home plate in men's college and professional baseball. The 17-foot difference results in reduced reaction time of over 0.1 of a second, a significant amount of time given the speed and distance. A softball also connects with a pitcher at a higher average speed than a baseball due to the shorter distance between home plate and the pitcher's circle."

Already scary enough without it being faster than a baseball.
