I'd have to believe most college campuses are actually pretty open to this, unless you go to like, Oral Roberts or some shite.

Whoever this is, is a drama queen and a narcissist.

If a small, southern town with a powerhouse D1 football program can defend star players being accused of rape, assault, or burglary, I don't see why they would persecute him or even care that he doesn't believe in Jesus.

This is truly a sad article. Those who have never had a close relationship with Jesus will never understand what we believers know. Christianity is not an indoctrination as it was suggested in this young man's opinion. A relationship with God is something which is more rewarding than any time we spend on this earth. Whether he likes it or not I will pray for this young man. It does not matter who he is to me.

I thought the opposite. Struggling to explore life's mysteries outside of the convention is noble.

Boy I love living in the south, but I am so sick of the bible thumpers.

I had a relationship with god for 17 years in school, we broke up,it was meaningless.

I decided aids and Ebola that "he" created and skin cancer from "his" sun made him an evil SOB that I wanted no part of.

And we're a damn good country for it.

I don't think a lot of people realize how important the freedom of religion is.

The only sad part about the article is that he is completely justified for staying in the closet as an atheist. Self-righteous Christians would make this guy's life miserable if he used his public platform to spread awareness of his completely rational rejection of theism.

And your assertion that he has never had a "close relationship with Jesus" is completely presumptuous. Just because someone is atheist does not mean that they have never been believers at some point.

It's reasons like this I hate living in the south. He doesn't want to reveal his identity because of people like you. He feels hiding it is easier than admitting it publicly because people like you would berate him and try and convert him. And that's a damn shame.

Maybe this is what you have seen in your experience at southern schools but from what I have seen at a particular SEC West school, this is far from the truth. Sure maybe everybody bows their head during some team prayer (if that), but I've never seen any player at the school I went to having to hide in shame or sneak around while acting like a "heathen" at a host of popular bars or parties that
would make the devil blush at some of the activities that went down.

If anything, the kids who actually lived their faith out and practiced what they preached dealt withe more ribbing and redicule than anybody. I remember hearing the testimony of a very popular baseball player from a championship team in the mid-90's about how he was constantly getting made fun of by the rest of the team simply because he chose not to sleep with half the bats girls and cleat chasers. Sure didn't seem like their was pressure from the BIble thumpers at school to make sure everybody had their purity ring on at night.

So yea I am thinking your not gonna have some big superstar football player, randomly go off in the next TV interview that he is a big time athiest and what not. At the same time, Please don't act like anybody gives a crap what they believe or how they act in their personal time. As long as they aren't getting arrested or screwing over the wrong boosters daughter, nobody cares. To insinuate that players have to go around walking on egg shells, making sure it doesn't get out that they believe a certain way about religion is laughable.
