most catchers don't play in 55+ games regardless. And Romero has played in 42 but started in 31. It just took that long before Mainieri realized Papierski's defense wasn't enough better than Romero's to justify keeping him on the bench. I see what you're saying, but it's not like Romero has only played the second half of the season. He's been the most clutch player on the LSU team this year. I think it's also presumptive to say his numbers would be worse had he started sooner. His numbers are what they are and they are very good.

W/o looking it up, it would mainly come down to whether or not Romero qualified for the "batting title" or not. Ya know like in MLB (and college). Aka a reserve that goes 13/26 isn't gonna "lead the league" in batting average b/c he hit .500)
Honestly, I didn't even think of Romero for this reason (right or wrong). I could very well be wrong. If he "qualifies" that's probably for sure enough to pass him by Rivera at the very the least.

He has 123 ABs. Guys that have started most of the season have, on average, 180 ABs. Guys that have started literally every game have b/t 200-210 ABs, although LSU does have a guy that has started every game (Cole Freeman) that has 168 ABs. I would surmise Romero has plenty of ABs

mlb requires 502 PA (not AB, but PA) to qualify for the batting title. works out to 3.1 PA/game. not sure if Romero qualifies using that standard. i assumed he didn't therefore i left him out of even consideration (along with guys like Chris Reid, Jacob Robson, and even Peter Alonso (which was probably dumb/wrong specifically even projecting ahead a couple weeks)
Peter Alonso belongs, that being said, all of these 1B have had good/great seasons:
Alonso
Alex Destino
Zach Lavy
Hunter Melton
Niko Buentello
Nathaniel Lowe
Evan White
Jordan Rodgers played 1B most of the year for UT
Once again proves how much talent in this league. Not making 1st or even 2nd team All-SEC is not a slam.

I'm not saying it's a slam, but I highly doubt he's ineligible for consideration, which is basically what you're saying and I'm arguing against. He has 148 plate appearances in 52 games LSU has played. So just under 3.1, but I don't think the SEC uses the same criteria. He will more than likely eclipse that MLB threshold before postseason play begins, even though that 3.1 number is likely irrelevant. And that 3.1 number is for a batting title, not an "all-star" team.

Magnum is a 1st teamer. You could throw a pitch in the grandstands and he would still hit it. I have never seen a #1 hitter get intentionally walked until this guy stepped up in the batter box.

You should relocate Ethan Paul between the two categories listed above, as he played 2nd Base (not SS) earlier in the season, but his fielding was terrible (12 errors). His hitting has been pretty good and he was primarily used as a DH once Kaiser was getting the starts at SS (Tyler Campbell moved from SS to 2nd, bumping Paul to a DH/PH role).
