MSU beat Alabama once from 1958 to 1992 and has only beat LSU twice in the last 25 years.

I don't consider that anymore competitive.

Kentucky was ineligible that season. But they were good. However, Alabama won all but two SEC titles in the 1970s.

Auburn played 266 games against Big Six teams from 1950-2015.

Bama played 252 games against Big Six teams from 1950-2015.

Auburn and Alabama rank #1 and #2, respectively, in number of games played against Big Six programs. Bama leads in winning percentage against those programs by a wide margin, and is the only Big Six program to have a winning record against every single other Big Six program.

Kentucky finished 2nd in the nation that year. I think UK wins that game. Would have loved to have seen it.

They finished 6th. And were ineligible for the postseason.

Alabama was 2 in the AP and UPI (coaches) in 1977. Beat Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl.

Notre Dame was awarded the AP and UPI poll titles.

According to whose poll? Because Alabama finished #2 in both the AP and Coaches Poll in 1977. That '77 squad was easily one of the best of the Bryant era. It defeated the #1 ranked team on the road and destroyed a Top 10 Woody Hayes-led Ohio State team, 35-6 in the Sugar Bowl.

The highest Kentucky got in the AP is #6; Alabama highest #2.

Alabama played and beat the #1 (USC), #18 (LSU), & #9 (Ohio State) during the season (ranked when played). Bama's only loss was to a 9-3 Nebraska team.

Kentucky played and beat the #4 (Penn State), & #16 (LSU) teams during the season (ranked when played). Kentucky's only loss was to a 5-6 Baylor team.

In 1977, #5 Notre Dame beat the #1 team and jumped #2 Alabama in the final AP poll.
