I got to be friendly with an older gentlemen and his wife who sat beside me at UK games. Over time getting to talk to him I found out that he was on a battleship at Pearl Harbor, but when his ship went down he was able to swim to safety. He then told me that he had been coming to UK games since the late 1930's (this was in 2002).
UK had a military appreciation each year, and I tried to get UK to honor him and any other WWII veterans still around, but they never returned my calls.
His wife died the next year, and he died shortly thereafter. He was a great American.
