If you want to disown trashy Alabama fans, I commend your effort. But contrary to your assertions, I highly doubt most of these really trashy fans are just now jumping aboard the Alabama bandwagon.

While I do think the trashier portion of the Alabama fan base probably has little to do with the institution, they are pretty devoted to Alabama football and are financially beneficial to the program.

I don't have to disown them. I don't associate with "trashy" people and they have no affect on me in any way.

My contention isn't that any certain type of individual is just now jumping on the Alabama bandwagon. Alabama football has a long history of success so you will see these types of people in every age group who are die hard Alabama fans.

My contention is you will see more of these types of people cheering for successful sports programs.

Absolutely. I'm not sure why a university would turn down money.

I think the problematic part for Alabama is that it has become a part of the cultural identity for Alabama. Not necessarily to outsiders, although that is a separate issue, but to the trashy elements of the state. Unfortunately for you, I think trashy folks in Alabama look to the two schools and see that the UA fan base better represents their lifestyle and behavior.

Personally, that would frustrate me. But that's because I view Auburn as more than just a team, but I wouldn't trust outsiders to recognize that the poor representations are simply related to fandom, not the institution.

Nah.

I'm not sure this is the case. My experience with those types of people is they don't believe they are trashy. That would likely lead them to distance themselves from people or institutions they believe are trashy. I think the opposite of what you contend is true.

People who don't recognize this are also people I wouldn't want to associate with. They are no better than the "trashy" people they claim to despise.

Just because you don't see it as trashy, doesn't mean you don't recognize it in other people/entities. It has little to do with whether or not they label it as trashy, only whether they identify with it at all.

As to perception, there is a distinction between not letting it change your behavior and being alright with it. Nobody wants to see something they care about disparaged, regardless of how they view the credibility of those doing the disparaging.

I agree with this. That was part of my point about trashy people removing themselves from things they believe to be trashy.

Most thinking people know this has nothing to do with the university. It hasn't affected my view of UA in the least.

I have lived in the bham/Hoover area for over 10 years and there are a lot of bandwagon fans. The majority of people here support whichever team is winning. Equally as trashy on both sides of the aisle.

I am in total agreement. Just go to Wal-Mart on a Friday night.

Easily Bama. Most Auburn fans are graduates or have family that graduated. Bammers usually don't have much to do with the University.

I live in Columbus, GA and I know two Auburn fans that have never even visited Auburn, despite living 30 minutes away.

In fact, 90% of the Auburn fans in this area did not graduate from any college, much less Auburn. This is predominantly Auburn territory as well, so we're not talking a few Auburn fans here and there.

If what you think is true (most Auburn fans are graduates or are related to a graduate), then your job placement program must suck considering nearly every gas station clerk, homely painter, vagrant on a bicycle, waitress, etc. in this area is always flaunting Auburn gear.

You should leave your mom's basement more often, sir. It's okay to admit you have trashy, sidewalk fans as well. No one is going to judge you. Auburn is a great school! Sidewalk fans aren't going to ruin its prestige. But you're not Troy or UAB (where your only fans are grads of the school). You're a perennial powerhouse program in the nation's best college football conference. It comes with the territory.

I don't know why Auburn fans have such a problem with accepting the truth. I recall Auburn fans on the internet spewing the drivel "We would never support a Wal-Mart NC trophy tour"... the very next year, more trashy Auburn people were photographed next to the trophy than trashy 'Bama people were the year prior.

Life lesson for you son.

You seem to be the type who did well in school. Honor roll, top 10% of your HS class, good ACT/SAT scores, etc. Ya think you're pretty damn smart, huh? You aren't speaking to people at your dumbass hick high school. You sound like a fricking idiot. Stop using words you don't fully understand and quit trying to lecture people.

You're welcome.

Definitely your average Alabama fan.

In terms of alumni, very little trash. About 20 years ago Auburn alumni would have been trashier due to the agriculture background. In today's world though, everyone gets accepted so there is a ton of trash at both schools

The student body at Alabama is generally wealthier than Auburn's. Old money families tend to send their kids to Alabama. However, BAMA also has a bigger sidewalk fanbase due to its success in football.

I grew up about a mile from the state line. Have a few family members sprinkled in here and there that are either Bama or AU fans.

At least where I'm from, there's absolutely no difference, which makes it even more entertaining.
