As a long time SWC member I can tell you 1 thing for certain.

ANYTHING Aggy has success in is due DIRECTLY to cheating. They are good at it, better than Auburn even. If there is a way to cheat the system, Aggy, will find it.

And we STILL own them all time.

aggies cheating history is long and strong... they think they are going to get away with it and .... over time they always get caught.

Arkansas and Rice were the only schools in the SWC during that time that were never put on probation.

Along with Baylor, because (maybe) Christians. But that school wasn't without its own scandal - we all remember Dave Bliss and the scandal that came about from the men's basketball team. That would be many years after SMU got whacked.

ETA for trivia: Bliss was the head coach for men's basketball at SMU at the time the football team got the death penalty. TIFWIW.

Because Texas, not a&m, was the team in the 80s and 90s that was banned by the NCAA from bowl games and television?

This.

Only reason I would care about Eric Dickerson is because he stiffed me for a Trans Am

A&M likes to blame unlimited scholarships victim, but in reality Stallings had more kids on that roster than any other SWC team 3-4 years straight. He had a pretty good booster game as well.

There’s holes in this story. Firstly, what trans am cost 50k in the 1970s? Secondly, a black guy with a corvette in the 50s and not make national headlines. Look, I get it. However this shite don’t seem right.

The way Dickerson refuses to talk about what he got from SMU to this day makes me think he’s still getting payments or some kickbacks to this day. Like he probably owns a percentage of some oil company as a silent partner or some shite

Stallings was paying players, but 1965 was the first year that players didn’t have to join the Corps. Recruits with family land definitely got perks, but something in ‘69 drastically changed the recruiting base to predominantly urban areas. Divided locker rooms were a problem until Sumlin. Now, we have more money than Texas, and we don’t let our Big Money Donors poison the locker room with Brody the Westlake walk on with the 25’ Super Air Nautique. I personally don’t give a frick. I was a drunk through the 15 years of Aggie suck I’ve seen in my life. The rest have been either us beating tu arse for ten years in my childhood, an exiting game, or the embarrassment that has been the last decade of football in Austin. I really don’t see a scenario where Texas will ever be able to complete with A&M in football.

Texas ran the infractions committee for all intents and purposes in the '70s through the '80s. It wasn't just against A&M, if you recall SMU got the death penalty and virtually every SWC team was on probation during that time. The punishments handed out were also very uneven.

Was what it was, everyone was cheating and they just were pissed we kicking the shite out of them. I certainly don't claim A&M was innocent but it's laughable to think Texas and the other SWC schools weren't doing the exact same thing if not worse.

I was a freshman at A&M in '85. It wasn't a very well kept secret in the 80s that everyone was cheating and that some cheaters were better than others. The other not so well kept secret was you got extra special attention if you beat the Horns, especially if you beat them consistently.

Texas fans are insufferable. They had air cover from the media and influence inside the NCAA and act like they were all clean.

I seem to remember TCU & Houston also having issues during that same time frame in the SWC. Tech & Rice we’re non factors at the time. Baylor had to be paying players - that’s the only way to get someone to go to Waco (See Mike Singletary).

The only issue that came up for U. of Texas was an issue OU raised about the recruitment of Edwin Simmons. Texas bought him a pair of boots and got slapped on the wrist. Literally, everyone was getting dinged except Texas …A&M, SMU, TCU, Houston, OU (Big 8) all had encounters with the NCAA during that era.

Your story is almost correct. He kept that Trans AM.

It was Greg Pruitt at Oklahoma who had the Corvette. His nickname was Greg "Corvette" Pruitt. He always drove a Corvette. Back in those days everyone was operating under the table. The only school that was not caught was Rice and that is because the NCAA didn't have the heart to investigate why Tommy Kramer (former Minnesota Vikings QB) signed with Rice.

SMU got the death penalty because They (and their benefactor, former Governor Clements) wouldn't stop (or be more discrete) with throwing the "benefits" around.

you poor dumbass aggy. anm get 1/3 of the puff money which comes from The Universty of Texas Land. your Athletic Department has no money. it owes the school 30 million dollars which it has paid back.

First of all. Before any other discussion, Eric Dickerson is a total piece of shite. He continues to lie to this day. Yeah A&M bought him a Trans Am...but his comments about the “college experience “ reveal his lying arse. A&M has a student population of about 33,000 compared to 5800 at SMU. Less than 10% were cadets. But Dickerson would have you believe he chose a small religious school for his “college experience.” SMU didn’t get the death penalty for a car. Everyone was passing out cars at that time. SMU was directly paying football players. After SMU got caught, Even the Governor of Texas an SMU alum admitting paying the players with the faniusquote, “we cant just cut them off, we will have to taper off their money.”

He didn't need to. God and everyone knew. Every coach in the SWC has admitted to cheating across the SWC

It was happening in other conferences too. Thing is, t.u was getting whipped back then, so they had trigger men do the dirty work/snitch
