Wow! Fan of a Bulemia coached team lecturing about coaches!

To address the point, Mark Snyder didn't forget how to coach defense between 2012 and 2013. Aggies will have a lot more depth in the front 7 this year.

The true sleeper team this year is the one that isn't on anybody's sleeper list.

Add in Miles Jack to the frontline and I don't see the Aggies having a worse defense than last year. That being said, dismissed players might hurt the improvement.

Yes, that's what I'm saying.

It was insinuated that Sumlin got the raise because he's worth it. That isn't the case.

Nope. We have the depth on D Line this year I believe, there's no excuse for the kind of defense we had last year.

Well, roger as right as he is, isn't on this.

I'm arguing that Sumlin is worth the money.

You say it was paid to retain him.

Does that NOT mean Sumlin is WORTH it?

Fu** me, your Arkansas is showing.

USC thought he was, they offered him $6 million a year. He actually took less to stay at A&M.

All that really matters is that USC thought so highly of him that it took $5 million a year to keep him. Whether or not he is "worth it" is pretty meaningless.

$5 million is worth not going through another coaching search. I will agree with that.

By definition, you give a person a raise BECAUSE you think they're worth it. Now, you may be SPECULATING about his future performance exceeding past results, but you're not going to pay someone more than it's worth to you. And if A&M had to pay Sumlin that much to keep him from moving to USC, that says something about how much the Trojans thought he was worth.

We'll see if A&M's investment is good or not, but early returns are positive.

With respect to Snyder, another bad season and he's likely done. Not because Sumlin is going to feel pressure to fire him, but because Sumlin wants to win. If Snyder isn't the guy, then Sumlin is not going to keep him on. Sumlin, while at Houston, fired his first DC, even though his Cougars had gone 18-9 in his first two years.

So we paid a coach who we don't really want so that we don't have to look for another coach to replace him?

This thread hurts my head.

I fully understand that half of the argument and I agree with it to an extent.

But the value of simply having a coach in place is also worth a lot, and that's why A&M ponied up the cash. I'm saying that the high price tag is more about A&M avoiding another coaching search than it is about Kevin's actual worth as a coach.

So we deem Sumlin as being worth 5mlion. No matter how to you try to reason with it, that's the value of Kevin Sumlin, at least for us.

Admit it, your argument is stupid.

Ever see a late night infomercial? You'll hear things like "Buy now and get this twenty dollar value, absolutely free."

These companies don't make money by giving things away. If they say something is a 20 dollar value, but they're giving it to you for free, then the item is not worth 20 dollars. If it was, they wouldn't be giving it away. In this case the item is likely worth about 10 dollars, and the price of it is worked into the other thing you bought to get the "free" item.

Sumlin's agent used the same strategy on A&M. Pay him $5 million now, and you don't have to go through another lengthy coaching search. You get to keep the guy you already have, and avoid all the crap that goes along with hiring a new guy.

That total package is worth $5 million. Sumlin alone is not. This is evidenced by no other coach with his type of résumé being paid a similar salary.
