I have nothing against the Vols, just wondering if maybe the root problem is not Butch Jones, Derek Dooley or Phillip Fulmer. Maybe it is just Tennessee. They had a good run in the 90’s when UGA, LSU and at times Bama and Auburn didn’t have their shite together. It is a different landscape now, Tennessee does not have the top notch in state level talent some of these other schools have.

Fulmer had a program as strong as any entering the 2000’s. Is not like he was in his 80’s and the game “passed him by”, like it maybe happened to Bowden at FSU. He was still on top of his game and it was under his watch, under his terms that this skid started. It is easy to put all the blame on the coaches, but maybe Tennessee just doesn’t have it anymore. Sure Jones or Dooley where not NC winning coaches (Fulmer was though) but they had solid resumes entering their tenures. There was reason to be optimistic at the time of their hires; neither was a John L. Smith type of hire than you just knew it would not work.

Should have beaten Florida this Saturday, Tennessee looked like the better team most of that game.

This also happened against OU. I see it two ways:

1. This team is figuring out how to win and will lose some heartbreakers in order to do that (optimistic me)

2. This team follows the attitudes of the coaches and tightens up in crucial moments (realistic me)

I don't think there is such a thing as "not having it anymore", there are a lot of coaches that could win now with this talent.

I think we still have some internal issues about what we have to do to start getting W's.

But the talent or ability to recruit top level talent to TN is not an issue at this point.

I don't know if you have been following recruiting rankings lately. Fulmer, Kiffin, Butch recruited like a rock star at UT. Only Dooley landed subpar classes.

I'm starting to think they stole the "SOV" moniker and relabeled it Same Ol' Vols

Dooley had a subpar resume. Recruiting hasn't been their problem. Development has. As bad as their program was until Jones came in, it is going to take some time to get it into shape. It will take another year or two for them to get over the hump.

Same problem as AU & Arky, expectations were too high. All 3 teams look pretty good. Just need to give their coaches some more time. All 3 teams could have, and maybe should have won last weekend.

I can see the point on AU and UT, no so much with Arkansas this year. They have a veteran QB that has played decently well, and a relatively veteran team. MSU is the only other team in the West with a proved QB though the rest of the team is almost new. This was the year for them to get Bama, Auburn, LSU the same season, those teams are vulnerable and Arkansas never has recruited at the level of those teams to expect realistically many windows like that to happen again.... They may still beat those 3 but dropping a game to Toledo is just poopoing the bed.

Arkansas has had some bad injuries and a really tough schedule. It happens.

Tennessee looked like they were considerably better than both Oklahoma and Florida. By most accounts they "should" have won both games.

The question is this: Can Butch and hence Tennessee "figure out" how to win, and if they do, can they sustain it from one year to the next (in contrast to Arkansas who finally figured it out at the end of 2014 but had forgotten by the start of 2015)?
