If Brockers wasn't on that 2011 LSU defensive line, then that defense wouldn't have been anywhere near as good.

You are correct, but we still had incredible depth that year.

Mathieu was still the most important player on the defense.

Chavis would run the best system for his talent, and get maximum effort.

Not sure I agree with that.

For his system to work, Chavis needs one lockdown corner, one dominant DT and a solid MLB. An average pass rush is adequate because he does not rely on sacks.

When he has that lockdown corner (PP7 in 2010; Claiborne in 2011; Simon in 2012) he will roll coverage to the other side to help out the other CB when needed.

When he has that dominant DT, it frees up his MLB to make the plays in the running game. When he doesn't, you have breakdowns like LSU did early in 2014.

To answer your questions:

If Chavis was given a team of all average talent-all three stars- what positions would need to be upgraded first in order for Chavis's system to have a positive effect?

CB followed by DT.

If that team could NEVER upgrade a position-like one position was always going to be three star level-what position's stagnation would hurt Chavis's system the most? Hurt it the least?

Most: CB and DT.
Least: OLB and DE.

Sure, but a special player like that will always be the most important player.

The key for the Chavis system is a dominating front four IMO. They've got to be able to get pressure and get a push against the run.
