I have a good friend in Law School at Alabama right now, and he was telling me that almost none of the people lining up outside the stadium actually attended, or have any immediate connection to the University of Alabama. The people in school there just laugh their arses off and make fun of all the necks pissing their pants in excitement over the sight of 18 year old kids.

Serious question to the Bammers who actually went to, or have family who went to Alabama. Does this kind of stuff, in addition to the way Bama fans behave at away games embarrass you? I wouldn't want my school associated with these kind of people.

Sidewalk fans can get embarrassing sometimes. But without them Alabama doesn't have the football program it does. Their money spends just like an alumni's

Are you talking about for Fan Day? If so, there are way more people who didn't attend the University than who did attend that go to fan day.

If you are talking about for games then your friend is incorrect.

Also, what does it matter? Most of the people who go to the Falcons or Saints games never played for either team. They identify with those teams as representatives of their cities just as many college football fans identify with a university for one reason or another.

No such thing, hoss. Bammers didn't go to Alabama. Your tailgates are embarrassing, though.

For what it's worth, while I have no doubt there are plenty of people who attend Bama games that never attended the University... To suggest the majority of the people who are financially capable of holding season tickets - of which the wait list is 20+ years long - never attended the University is pretty silly.

Why would I be embarrassed by people that have no affiliation with me other than the fact that they are a fan of the same college football program I am? I'm not embarrassed to be white simply because white people do stupid shite all the time.

I'm a sidewalk fan. But still a fan. I admit some of our fans make the majority of us look like a bunch of morons, but subtract 10-15 people who have a lot more issues than Bama football and we are mostly pretty good folks. I attend 3 or 4 games a year becasue i have been pretty fortunate to have a pretty good job for a long time. A lot of people in this state are less fortunate so I am glad that A day and the running of the gumps is a free thing everyone can enjoy. If things go south for me and the only chnace i get to see the tide and the campus and for my girls to see the band, big al and the cheerleaders is A day then you better believe I am going to be there.

When I was growing up, I bled crimson and white. I knew every player, two deep. I had met Cornelius Bennett after a game and was subsequently a huge Bills fan.

Then I went to school there. I felt more a part of it than I ever had. Of course, I started to look at the people who were crazy Bama fans and didn't go there as kind of embarrassing. I mean, why would they care so much about something they had nothing to do with.

Then I got out of school and realized that although these people didn't go to school there, they had a sense of identity with the football program. Much the same way as I did as a child. I started to feel not embarrassed for their involvement, but ashamed at judging those who loved something just to love it.

Sure, they act foolish and take it way too seriously sometimes, but so did I as a child. They are part of our program even though they may not be part of our campus or university.

I'm fine with it. Their support and energy helps bolster the program.

Who gives a crap about fan day? Good for them. It's an opportunity for a lot of people to be a part of the program that otherwise wouldn't be able to - whether due to financial constraints or otherwise. I'm glad they get to experience it if it's something they enjoy. Kinda lame for people to make fun of others for something so simple. Everyone has a story.

I'll admit, some of Bama's fans can be over the top and a little too obsessed to the point of poisoning oak trees, and teabagging a drunk opposing fan passed out at a Crystal, but the fan day stuff is fairly typical of most higher end college programs.

I'm an LSU fan and I can remember the old Inside LSU Football show with the guy who says to his wife, " I'll be there in a bit, I'm watchin da Tigahs" (Roshto) That guy was a real fan and a rabid one at that. If you spoke with him, there was no way you were coming away from the conversation thinking that he ever stepped foot inside of any of the classrooms on campus for a class . They are all over the place especially in the South, but they also abound in Ohio, Oklahoma and Nebraska.
