Kevin Sumlin is a great coach, but even a great coach can make mistakes.

Sumlin needs to man-up and admit that he made a BIG mistake when he failed to retain Dat Nguyen from the Mike Sherman staff.

Kevin, give Dat a call and ask him to come back to College Station.

We could go to a 5 3 4 defense. That would help tremendously.

That would probably help, also.

If our defense is giving up more than 5 yds/play for a penalty for illegal participation, then yes, it would help.

Dat doesn't recruit, so Sumlin won't give him the time of day. Sumlin recognizes the importance of recruiting, and all of the assistant coaches are focused on bringing in talent.

Our defensive woes are talent based. Everyone good is young or playing out of position due to depth issues and injury. Everett looks awesome at safety though. Thank God.

Does Dat still have some eligibility left? That is the way he could help.

No, he didn't make a mistake. From listening to some of Dat's interviews, he wasn't completely comfortable with the recruiting game. He seemed ready to leave the coaching staff, as much as he loves A&M.

The NCAA is full of programs that recruited great players and then did not develop those players to their potential. You need COACHES, not just recruiters.

With that being said, every high school linebacker in the country is familiar with Dat Nguyen, and he was one of the smartest linebackers ever to play the game.

Personally, I think that HS linebackers would line-up for the opportunity to learn from him.

I thought the logic was:

Sumlin was a linebacker, therefore A&M will inevitably have a good defense.

I don't have all the information but I remember saying things similar to this about petrino. I think having an elite offense like what you guys put on the field hurts the defense. I've heard posters reference how many WRs Sumlin needs, well those scholarships have to come from somewhere, petrino took from the DBs to have more WRs. Also the defense is going to wear out quicker because they're on the field more. So when you take into account less depth to make room for more offensive depth and more time on the field you get these low powered defenses that we fielded with petrino. What does your defensive and offensive depth chart look like?
