When Rick Pitino took over in 1989, Kentucky was at it's lowest point in program history. What he did over the next 7 years was utterly miraculous and he deserves to be praised by Kentucky fans forever, regardless of where we went later.

Cal took over, not as bad, but also a difficult time in Kentucky basketball history. We hadn't won anything in over a decade, and his first 6 seasons were possibly the best run of 6 seasons since John Wooden.

However since 2015, things have not been the same. That loss in the Final Four of the undefeated team seemed to suck the life out of Cal. I think he was going to retire after the 2020 season, I think he felt that team could make a deep run and then covid cancelled the tourney and I think he felt he couldn't go out that way. But since then, all his teams have struggled from the same issues and have made no progress during the season to make us think they were improving.

I don't think the multiple freshman model works anymore. Too many teams have multi year players, and the difference shows at tourney time. All of UK's freshman played terrible last night ,deer in the head lights terrible. Any reasonable Kentucky fan knew this was possible and likely to occur given how they played all season, good one game, terrible the next.

In his interview after the game, he legit looked defeated and I've not seen him that way before. When he was introduced as the UK coach he said he didn't expect to be here more than 10 years, and he's at 15 now, and I think he's been driven to get a good season to go out with, but that doesn't seem to be happening. I do somewhat feel bad for him in that regard.

So, what happens next? No idea. I think he either stays, but gets rid of Antigua and Coleman and brings back Kenny Payne, or he leaves completely or takes the ambassador role he's been offered previously.

Where does Kentucky turn if he retires/leaves/gets fired? I'm sure Drew will be the first call.

What happens to this team and next year's? I suspect Sheppard will be back, Dillingham will be a top 5 pick, Wagner will go pro, Bradshaw will transfer, Z will go back to Europe, Edwards will either try pro or transfer.
I suspect it will depend on the coach they hire for next years class.

For those who mention buyouts, college athletics plays with monopoly money, you only need to look at the Jimbo deal to know that. The money is irrelevant, there are plenty of boosters who will pay whatever to do whatever.

I'm on vacation most of the next 2 weeks, so now I know I don't have to pack any UK merch to take with me.

And finally, congrats to Oakland. Their coach knew what would beat Kentucky, and their team played great and executed. This team was so predictable and anyone who is surprised this happened didn't watch them this year.

Comments are always welcome, and I hope fellow UK fans will chime in with their thoughts.

Oakland is another much older team. It matters. The kid averaging 12 points a game and going for over 30 is 24 years old. But, that said, Kentucky missed bunnies and dunks and basically, looked out of sorts all night. Kentucky showed some real moxie and hit some hard 3s coming down the stretch to give themselves a chance but again were not playing fundamental defense and left a guy wide open in the corner for a backbreaking 3. Just like that another blueblood bites the dust to a Cinderella. And Sheppard, dude, it takes more courage and effort than you seem to be willing to give. He never played like he understood how important he was to this team. That too is on Cal.

Cal is going to be evaluated this off-season on the cumulative effect. The state of the program is harshly underperforming. SEC titles do matter and playoff performance is everything. I think he's gone.

This. And I think much like Saban it’s too much for him and has ruined his strategy and competitive advantage

Well said. They did look out of sorts almost the entire game, Dillingham nor Sheppard or any of the freshman played well. One and done's are not made for the tournament. Its just the reality of it.

Both Cal and Muss tried to go with one and done squads this year, either playing a lot of freshmen, or bringing in one year mercenaries through the portal.

Neither team gelled all year long. Muss, in the past, always had teams that finally put the pieces together and went on a tear at the end of the year. This year we looked more out of sort in our last game than we did our first.

I think coaches who were greatly successful in the past are going to struggle to adapt to the new reality of college sports, basketball in particular. I'm not sure Cal has enough left in the tank to change his ways this late in his career.

He might, but he will be a bust going that high. Dillingham is trash. Reminds me of Kira Lewis, fast but small and not a great scorer or distributor. Lewis went in the first round but never did shite in the nba.

I grew up in KY and have been a UK BB fan all my life. These Cal teams of last several yrs have driven me to quit watching UK live because they lose so many games they were not supposed to and to non competitive teams. My Louisiana friends here were telling me they had UK going deep into tourney and I just laughed at them but hoped they were correct. I honestly expected them to lose this game or the second round for all the same reasons you elaborated in teh OP.

Geaux Big Blue! Hopefully Cal steps aside in the coming days

Program has been going into the toilet for several years. I've quit watching UK basketball. I follow off and on via checking scores occasionally throughout the season. Couldnt tell you any of the players off the top of my head. Football I can handle goofy losses, basketball there's no excuse.

Ive said it before, i would unironically take Pitino back right now if it were an option. He's a mummified corpse but I think he'd do better. I think most options could.

When the football team is infinitely more fun to watch than the basketball team here, something weird is going on.

So, I will continue to watch football and pretend we don't have a basketball team.

Football I'm optimistic for. New WR coach, New OC, New QB, our old O line coach is back from Bama. Gonna be a monstrosity some games but should be fun.

I get the gloom and doom for Kentucky fans given their bad luck over the last few years in the tournament.

But some of this is just how basketball "happens".

Some teams have several years in the tournament where they have good things happen when they are unlikely.

Hopefully for Kentucky fans tournament outcomes will progress back to the mean.

The crowd shots of Kentucky fans in the Oakland game were painful to watch if you have any empathy for fans who live through their teams.

It's not just March (although cal ironically has said that's what matters)

We lost to UNC Wilmington earlier this season.

Lost to Evansville a few years ago during the regular season as well.

We lose during the year, we lose in the conference tourney, we lose/miss out on the ncaa tournament.

Dude literally said he was rooting for Bama when we missed out on the tournament. So no its not just a case of basketball having parity.

It's a case where the program is literally a broken toilet that's overflowing that's been put in a flaming dumpster and is running full speed into the grand canyon.
