To be honest, that struck me first as well. Would never have guess A&M at 11.

2012 - 2nd
2013 - 12th
2014 - 26th
2015 - 37th
2016 - 24th

2012 helps quite a bit. Also, the average is the actual S&P+ percentile, not the "ranking". So, in 2012, A&M had a really really high S&P+ number.

The gap between 1 and 2 is basically the same as between 2 and 17.

Damn. So far ahead talent-wise they really should never lose.

This is measure of performance, though, not talent.

But yea, nobody has been close to the consistency level of Alabama the last 5 years. Getting to the mountaintop is hard, staying there is nearly impossible.

They have a lot to do with eachother - but not many others in that top 4-5 talent gap have equal performance figures.

I completely agree with you, but none of them have had equal talent for that 5 year period either.

Florida State, Ohio State, LSU and USC are pretty close. They are consistently in the #2-#7 range in recruiting. USC obviously has underperformed (but they did have sanctions), and the others fall pretty close into their ranking spot.

As much as people like to argue the opposite, recruiting rankings are generally pretty close to predictive. There are certain things that can move it one way or another (great development, great scouting, elite quarterback play, great system), but for the most part if you sign the best players you have the best chance to win.

Absolutely. It's hard to overcome a team with the talent of Alabama and the coaching system of Saban. Many teams have one or the other, and win a lot of games, but to have both like they do; it's rare.

It generally gives us a chance every year, but there is always a team that has a near equal distribution of talent or a special guy who can cover up some areas of weakness. That's why it's hard as hell to win a national championship.

Because you have all that talent and haven't won anything of importance since 2011. 5 seasons ago.
