George O'Leary said this was getting voted on a few months ago when I heard him talk. He said this is to stop certain teams from abusing the system. Then he blatantly looked at all the team banners around the room and singled out the alabama one and said, some more than others.

Bama is the worst at this. But to be honest, since Butch has gotten there, UT has too. There will be fewer "forced transfers" with this rule.

Mr 5 star, Mr. Big Bucks booster will "loan" you $50,000 dollars a year, against future earnings, if you sign with us.

This should end well.

Great news for Missouri! Pinkel doesn't process players.

Not so good for Nick and Butch.

Coaches can no longer pull scholarships from athletes for athletics-only reasons.

If you have an academic scholarship and drop below the required GPA, you lose said scholarship for academics-only reasons. Fail to see why athletes deserve a free pass.

George O'Leary predicted Ohio State to win the MNC at that same talk. Dead serious. Thought he was an idiot at the time.

Will it really make much difference?

I guess my question would be how many transfers are "forced" as opposed to just being told they'll never see the field if they stay.

I may be completely wrong but I assumed it was the latter scenario a vast majority of the time.

I guess it could help insofar as their current coaches/programs having much more incentive to help them find a new school/program even if I imagine that's already a normal undertaking.

You're asking "why" in a philosophic sense? Like you were in ethics class, right?

If the convenience store clerk has a bad day he gets canned. If the United Auto Worker has a bad year he gets free counseling. Union.

Impossible to know, and great question. Just pulling a number out of my arse, but I'd guestimate 50/50. Half got their schollies pulled. The other half want playing time.

From the ESPN article:

"Several of the student-athlete representatives spoke passionately against the proposal that prohibits the removal of a scholarship for athletic performance. They argued that such a rule could inhibit team chemistry and undermine coaches' authority.

"People forget that it is our job to perform," Florida baseball player Josh Tobias said."

"Stipends, determined by institutions under federally created guidelines, have been estimated at $2,000 to $4,000 annually. They are designed to cover the cost-of-living expenses that fall outside athletic scholarships."

Based on the specific sports in the Alabama athletic department, there are 272 scholarship athletes. At $4,000 each, that's $1,088,000 per year. Not a significant amount for a Power 5 team, with the glut of cash coming in from TV contracts.

Several Republicans have paid for their daughters' abortions.

Several gays said they didn't want to get married.

Several Californians said they didn't smoke marijuana.

Your point?

Seriously: I like what those several players said. The article stated that one athlete in particular said that removing the threat of lost scholarship would reduce the coaches' authority and demoralize the team. I AGREE that their scholarships should not be guaranteed. I'm just forced to infer that the guarantee was won by SEVERAL other players' requests over SEVERAL years.

Basically, exactly what I posted. The "4 year guarantee" isn't universally supported by the players.
