that should have happened or almost happened:

ARMY
- 1944 NC
- 1945 NC
- 1946, #1 to end their season but overtaken by ND at the very end (they played to a 0-0 tie during season)

NOTRE DAME
- 1946 NC
- 1947 NC
- 1948 #2 going unbeaten
- 1949 NC

OKLAHOMA
- 1954 undefeated
- 1955 undefeated NC
- 1956 undefeated NC

- 1973 unbeaten
- 1974 co-NC
- 1975 NC

ALABAMA
- 1964 NC
- 1965 co-NC
- 1966 undefeated

- 1977 top 5 finish
- 1978 co-NC
- 1979 NC

NEBRASKA
- 1993 loss to FSU for NC
- 1994 NC
- 1995 NC

FLORIDA STATE (this may not belong but they had three chances in a row to do so)
- 1998 loss to Tennessee for NC
- 1999 NC
- 2000 loss to Oklahoma for NC

USC
- 2003 co-NC
- 2004 NC
- 2005 loss to Texas for NC

I thought about putting 2011-2013 Alabama. Had they won the Iron Bowl, they were well on their way to an opportunity.

Any other instances?

Alabama
77( Alabama (who won in the Sugar Bowl), and Michigan (who lost in the Rose Bowl). Alabama fans cried foul as they assumed, as the #3 team before the bowls, that if #1Texas and #2 Oklahoma lost (which they did), they would rise to #1 with a win over Ohio State)

OU has a great chance at a 3 peat this year if they run into Clemson again.

Bastard! But I had to chuckle, lol. It would be like losing to Miami 1985-1987.

There are AP and UPI trophies sitting in Tuscaloosa that say otherwise.

Love how people say Bama shouldn't claim the non-AP or non-UPI national championships then Hog fans say we shouldn't claim 64 AP and UPI.

2011 Bama NC
2012 Bama NC
2013 undefeated until the kick 6 in the iron bowl; followed by a crap performance against OU

That sounded more dickish than I thought it would! I hope we both make it again; that was a lot of fun last year.

Clemson won the game. You've earned the right to talk trash. I knew they would. I just didn't think OU was going to actually lead at Halftime. I'd rather not play Clemson again if both get there.
