Didn't Blackshier just get in the portal, again?

Yes, he was running 3rd string. He never played for us, so I don't know if that is a loss or not.. but it speaks of our depth imo

Alabama and UGA have a tendency to "run off" players that they recruit who don't "hit". Bama used to call this "the process", the idea being that that recruits who miss leave to go elsewhere so Bama can keep bringing in large recruiting classes filled with highly ranked recruits. The ones who stay are "hits", the ones who transfer out are "misses" and it makes sure they always had the best talent on their roster.

Which is why I’m not too worried about the roster turnover for now. We’ve been doing it for 17 years. And Saban left as solid of a foundation as you can ask for. Including a top 2 recruiting class. DeBoer just has to prove he can recruit moving forward. Which seems good so far.

He was already eating himself out of the LB position at Alabama. Looks like he’s 6-2 260 now.

I don't think turning the roster over is a bad thing at all, unless numerous starters are leaving.. that's that probably a sign that something is really wrong in the locker room and/or with the coaching staff.

I just thought it was interesting that we will all be seeing a lot of new faces this year.. and probably going forward..

I don't know why Blackshier can't settle down but you guys are not loaded at the position. I suspect Sarkisian will have to do more LBer portal hunting.

"But with the departures of Blackshire as well as fellow portal entrant S’Maje Burrell, the position could become a portal priority. Sophomore Liona Lefau, redshirt freshman Derion Gullette, and true freshman Ty’Anthony Smith are the only other scholarship linebackers on the roster."

this isn’t accurate

Anthony Hill 5 star soph
David Gbenda Sr with starts
Blackwell

and others. I think we have 7-8 for 2 spots. but I do think it’s possible we add 1

Colin Simmons 5 star fresh could probably play there as well.. but he is listed as an Edge right now

I wouldn’t say it’s loaded.. but it’s a solid group.. Hill is really good

eta: I just opened the article.. the paragraph before was a pretty important paragraph

quote:

The loss of Blackshire adds to a sudden concern about depth at linebacker. Sophomore star Anthony Hill Jr., last season’s Big 12 defensive freshman of the year, solidified himself this spring as the starting middle linebacker. David Gbenda returns as a fifth-year senior starter, and Mo Blackwell Jr. has proven himself over the past three years.

Texas plays a 4-2-5.. 7 is probably the right number.. but imo 6 is doable with Simmons on the roster.. if needed in a pinch

Their strength at Edge might give them a drop back ILB

idk if he can pull it off. but I think Sark is cross training a lot of positions to add flexibility to depth and formations

as an example, we have at least 3 starters that can play all 3 secondary positions

I believe he is cross training the edges and LB’s the same way..

But yes, our Edge’s last year were almost non-existent when Burke got hurt.. this year, it should be one of our strengths, which will help replace the monsters we lost inside and they should also help our secondary
