Where do they stand as far as top teams all time in SEC history? I don't look at their loss to Florida as a setback due to the fact it's common for a great SEC team to endure a loss to a fellow member because of how tough the conference is.

Anyhoo...why would I, a fan of the team who had to sit in the Superdome to witness a loss, post about LSU? Well, after many years later, I realize how flawless they were, how they got better throughout the season, and how they are responsible for the start of what we know of SEC domination today.

The Sugar Bowl still baffles me, how OU was not the same as they were in the regular season. The talent was still there, but they became so vulnerable. LSU was a damn monster. The result felt like a blowout even though it was a 7 point difference.

For me, 2003 LSU ranks high up there, top 10 quality all time in SEC history. And a loss in their record has no effect.

Good post. Most people didn't realize just how dominant that defense was.

I went to each LSU home game and a couple of away games in the 2003 season. Through the Florida game I thought the team was beatable - not for the reason that Florida beat them, which was they didn't show up. After that I was confident they'd win out.
They don't get as much respect as they should at least in part because this is the team that caused the national sports media to throw a tantrum and force the BCS computer/poll formula to change.

It's always so convenient that when you lose its because you didn't show up. Gtfoh

Any SEC national champ is in the consideration. The real flaws with the arguments in favor of this team this team: 1: and no offense to OU, is that LSU didn't get to play USC in the title game; 2: beat UGA twice, thus diminishing the record of the 2nd best SEC team that year.

Saban is a great coach, but it's undeniable that he had a game every season at LSU where the team was just not into it. Dead flat. Bama fans might have the same experience; they'd have to tell you.
It's a loss whether the team showed up or not.

The discussion is about a championship team. Hog fans can sit in the corner and stay quiet.

It wasnt often in lsu history, up to that point, that defensive lineman were dropping into coverage. Completely confused OU, and marcus had a oitstanding int because of it.

That team is the second best in lsu history, behind 2011.

Note: the 2011 team only counts games played in the calendar year of 2011

Kinda. Seems they lose confidence after giving up a few big plays more than anything.

More on the offensive side. Completely out of sync. In hindsight maybe it's a Jimbo thing, not a Saban thing.

A ridiculous defense and an underrated offense led by the guy who killed Tennessee's program.

Edit: Very similar to our 06 team.

I have no idea how we won that game. It was Leak's first start as a true frosh and he got knocked around like a pinball. Zook was firmly on the hot seat and somehow went 3-0 @ LSU (eventual #1), #11 Arkansas, and vs #4 Georgia, all back to back to back.

Edit: Arkansas finished at 9-4 and beat Texas that season. Georgia finished #6. We weren't a bad team by any means but starting a true frosh and of course the Zooker held us back.

Wow, was just thinking Leak was around for a long time but not really. Basically, Leak defeated a national championship team while LSU lost to an eventual national championship QB.
