William B. Travis and James Bonham were both born in Saluda County, South Carolina.

Bonham's house is still there today.

Overall, 8 Alamo defenders came from SC.

You're welcome, Texas.

They might have been born in Carolina, but those men are Texans. They died for Texas.

How many Texans were at the shelling of Fort Sumter?

The Fighting Palmettos were also the first to storm Mexico City and thus the SC flag was the first to fly over its gates, ergo we saved Texas from Mexico again.

It’s a tough memory for sure letting Mexico win like that.

There were other South Carolina men at the Alamo.
Lemuel Crawford - KIA
Samuel Maverick - Left Alamo before the siege as delegate from San Antonio to the independence convention. Bonham was also elected as a delegate, but declined the nomination to stay through the siege.
George Neggan - KIA
Edward Nelson - KIA
George Nelson - KIA
Cleveland Simmons - KIA

There might be a couple more. It is not clear where a number of the men at the Alamo came from. Just names on a muster roll that historians haven't been able to pin down.

Hell, more than a dozen men who died at the Alamo were from Ireland! Texas needs to recognize Ireland as a major contributor to the cause.

PS- Alabama had 5 who were there.

If not for SC, Tenn, and Mississippi there would be no Texas.

Thank God for South Carolina. Without SC and its pork bbq, there might not even be a Texas.

Did they go to Texas or Texas A&M. That should narrow it down some...

This is true. The decalb palmetto guard were the first in and did plant the flag. I have Nathaniel Stratton’s belt buckle and 2 coat buttons. He and his brother John were in the Decalb palmetto guard. 1 wounded and the other unscathed. You aggs need to read your history. We saved your asses. Both from Charleston SC.

Spoiler alert, things didn’t go so well in that battle.

We have that memorial of the Mexican War vets with that Palmetto tree on the State House grounds. When the Ags are there on Friday they should treat it as a shrine of their saviors. In lieu of lighting candles, they can perhaps leave their jars.

Over 400 Texan Army POWs were massacred at Goliad. There are no accurate muster rolls for who all was there. There was bound to be some more South Carolina men there, too.
