I dunno, that was why I started this thread.

Looked wildly erratic to me with some teams playing 4 games, some 5, some 6 and some 7.

Plus there was obviously no attempt to power rate them in any way ... all they went by was winning percentage.

Because Wallace Wade was their coach at the time.

It is crazy to think that in the 38 and 39 regular season's opponents only scored 13 total points against TN's defense.

That's insane!

But I figured five games in conference and one OOC tie.

So, in essence, ten of those eleven ties would have been in five of the same games.

But I dunno.

Some teams played 7 conference games, others 4.

Yes ... well, I think you are alluding to what I thought everyone would notice right out of the chute.

Yes, I was surprised it made it that long w/o anyone pointing it out. Georgia only had 4 conference games that year.

...but the real story is Bama had to play 6 SEC games and LSU only had to play 5. Looks like the REC wasn't in control back then, when did they take control of the conference?

Pretty much so up through at least the early 70's. Case in point: 1972 AU beats Bama, AU loses to LSU. Both 1 loss, Bama gets the title because they were 7-1 and AU 6-1. Bear used the extra game trick to claim several conference titles.

Looks like 1973 was the last year of the uneven number of games played in the conference. Probably a response to Bama stealing the '72 title from Auburn.

Uneven number of games played in 1976 and 1977, too.

Good catch. Note that in 76 and 77 only Bama and Ole Miss played 7. Bama finishes 7-0 to KY 6-0. But KY was on probation.

I hope you realize that had AU even played another game and win it, both would have still been conference champions under the rules of the time.

Seeing that, I thought it was weird that we only gave up 2 points to OOC opponents but had our only loss to one, so I looked it up.

We lost 2-0 to Fordham. Can't imagine it was a very exciting game.

Our tie was 0-0 to Ole Miss.

And in 1904 Vanderbilt outscored their opponents 452-4.

Those were some crazy years.
