Graves played a huge part in shaping Florida football. Took us to our first Orange and Sugar Bowls, recruited guys like Steve Spurrier and Jack Youngblood and played a role in the invention of Gatorade. Sad day for Gator Nation.

quote:

“A tremendous influence on my life,’’ Spurrier said Friday. “After my mother and dad, Coach Graves had the biggest influence on my life. I am so thankful for him. I had a chance yesterday to tell him I love him and I sincerely thank him for the influence he had on me.”

And got deals with all the pro sports leagues in the 70s to start using Gatorade.

Very good football coach. Quite the SEC man. Played two years for Bob Neyland at Tennessee. The second of three Florida Head Coaches with an unusual Florida-Tennessee connection. Graves replaced Bob Woodruff as Florida head coach in 1960 and retired after the 1969 season which oddly enough culminated with a Gator Bowl win over Tennessee coached by Doug Dickey, a Florida grad who played QB for Woodruff in the early 1950's.

Graves was one of the few players to have coached and played in the Sugar Bowl:

I believe it was only two, Graves and Jim Carmondy of Southern Miss in Bryant's last game in Tuscaloosa in 1982.

What coach got you stripped of your title? I don't think it was him.

Either way prayers to his family.
