April 2, 2015

Dear Ole Miss Family,

Several days ago I wrote to you about the decision by the IHL Board not to renew my contract to serve as Chancellor. Last week, Dr. Jim Borsig, Commissioner-elect for the Board, approached me with a “compromise offer.” The Board was willing to extend my contract for 21 months if I committed to retire in June of 2017. My performance or effectiveness up to that date would have no impact on whether I could continue to serve as Chancellor after June of 2017.

Over the last several days, Commissioner Borsig and I have continued conversations, and this week we traveled to meet individually with a number of Board members. In doing so, I hoped to determine if Board members would consider an extension that would allow me to serve as Chancellor without the outcome of my leadership predetermined. From these meetings it has become clear that the Board is not willing to do so.

I feel strongly, as do most of my advisors, that serving two years as a lame duck would make it difficult to recruit and retain key leaders and continue our momentum in private giving. More importantly, it is clear from the Board’s position that the Board would not support my leadership during any extension. For the University to thrive and succeed, the University needs a leader who has the support of its governing board, which I clearly do not enjoy. For these reasons, it is in the University’s best interest for me not to accept the Board’s offer.

I cannot sufficiently express the gratitude Lydia and I feel for the amazing outpouring of support for us personally and for our beloved University. We will leave our position in September with a deep love for this place and, most especially, the people of the Ole Miss family. Let me encourage all of you to follow closely the search process for the next Chancellor. The IHL Board will make a better decision knowing that you are engaged and that they are accountable to all constituents of the Ole Miss family.

Let me also encourage us all to follow our creed and treat Board members with civility and respect. I encourage any communication to the IHL Board members to be in that spirit. During the last few days, Commissioner Borsig has dealt with me in a candid and transparent fashion. Please remember that he was thrown into the middle of a difficult situation and was not involved in any of the decisions about my future.

My decision not to accept the Board’s offer may disappoint some of you. Please know the decision is made in the best interest of Ole Miss and out of love and respect for her. Lydia and I look forward to our last few months of service to the University and opportunities to visit with you.

Sincerely,

Dan Jones,

Chancellor

IOW, IHL just wanted to use him to calm down all the angry people who saw the firing for what it was and was hoping they could still get the money he brings in.

OM needs a BOT that at the very least can hire and fire its own Chancellor. As I said in the other thread, IHL can deal with other stuff (if it's not feasible to get rid of them) but they have too much damn power.

Everything about this has screamed bullshite politics from the beginning.

TL;DR version: OM-get fukhed. Xoxo, Danny Boy

I wasn't the guy's biggest fan, but what was done was shite. It's politics as usual in Mississippi (and everywhere else for that matter). Follow the money.

The shite fricks that make State and Ole Miss have such piss poor admission standards so we don't leave the HBCs of the state in the dust.

If you're a minority with a high school diploma and you can't get accepted to OM or MSU you are probably a danger to yourself and the rest society.

You pretty much have to be a felon or mentally challenged in order to not get into either Ole Miss or State if you're a minority. The admission standards are why our freshman and sophomore dropout rates are so damn high. Not because we're a party school.

Pretty much had nothing to do with the Oxford campus and everything to do with the Medical School.

My thoughts are Morris Stocks will be named Chancellor as sort of a "healer," much like IHL hired Charles Lee at MSU between Portera and Foglesong.

Stocks is a good man and will do Ole Miss well - but he isn't a visionary.

Follow the money indeed. Gotta find it first!
It was not a money problem ...it was a communication problem.

"What we have here is a failure to communicate!"

You can like Dan...even love him if you so choose. You can be sad or glad in the same pair of pants for Dan. Apparently "other" people had a differing opinion. That board is not comprised of good ole boys out to ruin Dan Jones no matter how many times you stomp your foot and say so.

You can't fire the IHL board for this, and that is what chaps the supporters of Dan most. He is not a victim unless you believe he made himself one. If you don't do what your boss says and continue to defy, you might get fired.

Dan Jones had a contract, not an appointment by God, to be chancellor of Ole Miss. The contract expires at some point. The IHL can renew or NOT.
There is no tenure with a contract. If that was true, Gerald Turner would still be here and Steve Sloan would still be the coach.

Blame whoever, whenever, however you want, but this negotiation has been going on for a few years not weeks.

And since this is NOT a dissertation or term paper, Crimson Legend, I don't try to polish its form or use transitional phrases correctly.
I am NOT the only fan to be glad he is gone, but I am also not a fan turning cartwheels and celebrating with a farewell party for Dan either!
Losing your job is painful no matter how it happens.

Like DJ said in his letter, he is still going to pursue a career. I wish him well ...no handshake, no raised fist, no feeling of victory, just sad about the whole thing really.
Nobody wins these kinds of conflicts completely, but I believe Ole Miss will prevail. She's a tough cookie and has weathered many a conflict.

For once a bunch of alums with a gazillion dollars to try to rule Ole Miss .....LOST!
That is encouraging to me.

As an Ole Miss Alum, this was an embarassing situation. I am not a fan of Dan Jones as a person, but I believe he did a great job as Chancellor and deserved to have his contract renewed and leave on his own terms when he decided it was right. I do not understand why anyone would be glad that he is gone. The Gertrude Ford Foundation has already announced they are no longer donating $20M for a new science building. I understand wealthy or famous alumni should not be able to influence the decisions a board makes, but I would much rather it be them that have influence than any of the corrupt politicians of MS and certainly any members of the Good Ol Boy Network.

I understand Dan had people to answer to and owed them the respect their position deserves, but after their actions and cowardness to man up and discuss their decision, I'm not sure they have anyone's respect. Sad day for Ole Miss and it's sickening to think this decision was made without considerig the best interests of the school.
