So far very good news on the Barnes' assistant front. Not only are we likely getting Ogden BUT to add to that Al Pinkins and Chris Shumate will be interviewed by Barnes. Both are worth keeping and both want to stay. Keeping Pinkins would be the biggest get and I hope it works out.

Please post what you know regarding Barnes' assistants here. Being able to put them all in a list would be great.

I'm such a retard that I didn't even realize Shumate was on staff. I enjoyed watching him play at Murray St back in the day.

The more I hear about Barnes and staff recruiting prowess, the happier I am about this hire.

Eh it's easy to forget about assistants so don't feel bad.

Same here regarding Barnes. Also, a lot of trustworthy non-homer hoops analysts have mentioned that Barnes is rejuvenated and wants to prove something. Given how everything went down at Texas + hearing his presser I thought that might be the case but hearing it from others who are just straight up national basketball analysts makes me feel really goof about that aspect. Also, Barnes likely knows this is his last chance to make an even bigger mark.

Year one will be tough but I expect we'll be very happy with him. I'm excited.

I think this is the biggest thing. He will be able to leave his mark and perhaps win something that people will remember him by.

I think it will work out alright.

I'm pumped with the hire. He's been to more NCAA's than we have in our HISTORY. Dude knows how to win and is highly motivated

I guess I was in between, I didn't hate the hire but I wasn't all jazzed about it. He did have a ton of talent at Texas that didn't do all that much. But, the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Barnes is definitely not slaw.

I'm where you are for the most part but when I consider the situation and how the small supply of coaches out there we could've done much, much worse (watch to see who Bama hires) and this was the best option

I'm still pissed at Hart and Co. Cause we never should've been in this situation to start with but this hire wasn't a bad decision

From Patrick Brown

Smart to Texas could affect Rick Barnes's Tennessee staff. Rob Lanier, Barnes's lead asst with Horns, was on staff with Shaka at Florida.

Lanier was supposed to be one of Barnes ace recruiters. It'll be interesting to see what happens with that situation.

I really hope we can keep his S&C coach. He's one of the best in the country.

From Rucker this morning

quote:

I just sat down with new Vols hoops coach Rick Barnes for about a half-hour (the on-the-record part), and it's easy to see why so many people like the guy so much. Very personable. Very honest. He says he doesn't feel 60 years old, and he definitely doesn't look like he's 60 years old.

The biggest news stuff was that Barnes confirmed Chris Ogden and Riley Davis will be on his staff, and that no player aside from Tariq Owens discussed the possibility of leaving the program, FWIW.

More in a bit. I've got to get to work on some of this stuff.

Sounds like former Texas S&C coach Todd Wright seems to be in play

quote:

@mikefinger: Todd Wright, the strength coach who basically served as an extra UT hoops assistant for 17 years, won't return to Texas.

@mikefinger: Wright is highly respected and will have plenty of options, whether he joins Barnes at Tennessee or not. Smart's bringing in his own guy.

@Ben_Fred: Wouldn't be surprised at all to see Todd Wright end up at Tennessee. He and Rick Barnes are close, and Tyndall's S&C coach was released.
