Texas is so delusional. What coach in their right mind would want that job, knowing that 16/17 to the tournament gets you fired?

What coach wouldn't want the Texas job?

Barnes was given 17 years. He made one Final Four.

I think a school with the resources of Texas isn't being irrational to expect a national title once every 2 decades.

Barnes in 17 years did more than any coach before him at Texas.

Texas has NEVER won a national title, so expecting one every two decades may probably be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

Barnes at Texas...

Final Four: 1
Elite Eight: 3
Sweet Sixteens: 5
NCAA Tourneys: 16

Texas 40 years before Barnes

Final Fours: 0
Elite Eight: 0
Sweet Sixteens: 5
NCAA Tourneys: 16

Barnes was Texas Basketball. Forcing him out may be the dumbest thing that program has ever done.

What decent coach is going to want to be at a program with unrealistic expectations like Texas, knowing you're in the same conference as Kansas, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Baylor, and Iowa State?

Being a victim of his early success reminds me of Tubby Smith--didn't he win the national championship his first year at Kentucky, but everything was a bit downhill after that?

I think when it is all said and done, UTx may regret letting him go.

So why was Nolan Richardson fired from Arkansas?

Richardson at Arkansas

NCAA Championships: 1
NCAA Championship Games: 2
Final Fours: 3
Elite Eights: 4
Sweet Sixteens: 6
NCAA Tourneys: 13

Arkansas 40 years before Richardson

NCAA Championships: 0
NCAA Championship Games: 0
Final Fours: 1
Elite Eights: 4
Sweet Sixteens: 4
NCAA Tourneys: 11

Richardson accomplished more in 17 years than his predecessors did in 40 years. He was Arkansas basketball. Forcing him out may be the dumbest thing Arkansas has ever done.

I can see Texas parting ways but I wonder if they have a clear target already in view that would be a clear upgrade.

One can just as easily say Barnes overachieved in recruiting as that he underachieved in the tourney with some very talented teams.

Not sure if Texas ever pulled the type talent Barnes did before he arrived? There is a danger in thinking that level of talent is a given.

You should recheck your stats

Arkansas had 3 Final Fours prior to Richardson. 30 win seasons. A plethora of conference titles. A plethora of 20+ win seasons.

Undo your post and try again

My post is correct. 1941 and 1945 is past the 40 year mark. Arkansas had made one final four in the previous 40 years before Richardson was hired. Nolan accomplished more by himself than every Arkansas coach put together. He shouldn't have been fired after one bad season.

He wasn't fired after one bad season. It's also laughable you trying to compare Texas basketball to Arkansas.

I have no idea why Barnes received the negative marks from fans.

All this talk of underachieving with the talent that he had...yet there was no precedent for that prior to his arrival.

Has Drew underachieved at Baylor?

Has Beilein underachieved at Michigan?

Matta at Ohio State?

There are ebbs and flows to the seasons of teams that aren't the bluebloods...hell, even some that aren't. It wasn't long ago that Duke was getting crushed by Nova in the Sweet 16, squeaking by Belmont, losing to VCU...or even Mercer.

It happens. Barnes has recruited talent and sort of achieved a Mack Brown-like resume where he raised the standard for success at UT.

It's laughable that SEC schools not named Kentucky or Florida would have issue with his success in Austin. I think a change of scenery would do the guy some good.
