Are you pretty absent-minded in your daily life?

No.

However, I am certain that I have ADHD because I have several thoughts flashing thru my mind in any given second and they all seem equally important. Therefore, it's sometimes difficult to focus on the task at hand when any moment I could be contemplating anything from my next art/writing project, to a new business product idea, to a random conversation I had with a stranger at a gas pump 3 weeks ago, to the song I've had on repeat for over 48 hours and the subtle chord that stands out, to a memory of my dead father....I have so many thoughts and ideas bombarding my mind that I sometimes get lost in my head and struggle to focus.

However, when I become truly interested in something I have the ability to focus like an Eagle. At that point there is no chance of failure. Instead of random thoughts bombarding my mind at speed of light, I have endless solutions bombarding my mind. I can clearly see the outcome and the path to that end goal. I can literally see it.

For example, when I accept an art commission (oil painting) or when I'm presented with a business project, I waste a lot of time in a creative dungeon unable to determine how the hell I'm going to accomplish this project. Then, (and this will sometimes happen at random or I'll force it if a deadline is approaching) I will take a drive thru the country in the early morning or late afternoon when the natural light in the sky is the most interesting, I'll put my music playlist on random, and then while driving time will literally slow down and I will go into somewhat of a trance where my mind is being flooded with creative ideas as countryside, cattle, hay bales, barns, and rivers pass by. Within 1 - 3 hours I will have created an entire outline or plan for the project and know for certain how to complete the project from start to finish...and I will have visually recorded the entire process in my mind. After that occurs I only have to execute the plan. I understand that if I simply execute the plan it will be successful.

However, the execution itself is sometimes the hardest part because I'll get sidetracked with new ideas completely unrelated to the project. Therefore, I find myself working on numerous projects at the same time, or reading several books at the same time.

I just wish I could harness or control my hyper focus all of the time.

Yep. And it's gonna get worse. Until their memory of it is unrecognizable. What they remember is... remembering it. Telling the story. Not the actual event.

Exactly.

And I find it sad because I see this happening with most people at an early age. It's almost like a very subtle barely noticeable precursor to dementia and no matter what you say they think you are wrong...because they seem to all be on the same page in relation to the false memory while you are the only one who knows for a fact that they are all wrong.

Does that make sense.

You're hitting the nail on the head. I see it more so in my Mom, she's only in her late fifties. She loves to tell stories and reminisce and I've notice how the stories have changed. She doesn't stop and struggle to recall, she seamlessly adds in false details. It's very unsettling for me, especially since I can't get anyone else to notice or they think I'm crazy/overreacting.

As far as focus goes, I'm the exact same way. It can even happen while eating a good meal, and I literally won't hear someone say my name right next to me. I am locked in. Programming, designing and building things, solving engineering problems. I can't really channel it artistically.

What's it like living with a debilitating case of Asperger's?

What I've discovered is that hyper focus is in fact a real life super power with limitless value that should be cherished by society no differently than water or air. Most people believe that they have no problems focusing when in fact they are average.

Hyper focus is a real gift and the closest thing to real life super powers.

Most people have average focus capabilities. This doesn't mean they aren't intelligent.

Some people are have above average focus capabilities and perhaps fall into the ADHD spectrum. They get lost within their focus but at times can hyper focus and occasionally do amazing things.

Very few people have incredible focus capabilities and can control their hyper focus at any given time. These people tend to be some of the world's most incredible innovators, scientists, politicians, musicians, or artists.

WG Dawg asked me what drugs I do. I don't do drugs with exception to the occasion morning concoction of 2 sudafeds and 2 Excedrin migraines.

However, if there was a drug on the market that promised hyper focus all of the time I'd most certainly seek it out because I truly believe I'm destined to accomplish great things...I just need to figure out which path among the thousands to millions that have flashed into my mind is the one to focus on.

I'll play along.

It's absolutely incredible when you're in a zone. No one can stop you. It's truly a super power.

It's absolutely frustrating and disappointing when you're lost in a spiderweb of ideas and thoughts. You're truly lost and no one can help you back to the light.

It's as if God is giving you glimpses of Godly powers just to take them away at the moment you're about to break out. However, you come to accept that you are more fortunate than most in the fact that at least God has chosen you to experience Godly powers from time to time.

Most other people aren't as lucky.

Therefore, I grasp at the belief that one day my dart will actually hit the bullseye and it will be a big deal. I truly believe that. I sense it coming no differently than I can sense the next creative surge, or the next storm...

Actually this discussion has spawned a little creative surge. I have the band Stars of Track and Field's song "Lullaby for a G.I." playing on repeat in the background which is helping me really focus on this fascinating topic and delve into the gift/curse that is hyper focus.

I just realized that it would be pretty interesting to write a book on hyper focus from a personal point of view rather than from a scientific point of view. I would simply write about my life experience in a way that people could more easily identify with.

I'm not sure whether or not someone has already done this, but I feel like I'm writing the manual right now...

It's hard to reach me on the weekend. Therefore, if you happen to be in Springfield let me know in advance during the week day so that I can plan for it.

Thank you. We get one life. I'm not content if I'm not dreaming big nor trying to accomplish something extraordinary.

However, I also understand that with age a change of perception sometimes occurs. Sometimes dreams become just that...dreams. And the definition of extraordinary changes with time.

On one hand it would be very cool to look back on my life and relish in truly extraordinary professional accomplishments. However, would I have to sacrifice relationships with my wife and children to accomplish those goals? I don't know. I want to be extraordinary in my professional and family life. I want to be extraordinary in all aspects.

But if being professionally extraordinary would cost me a strong relationship with my wife or children, I would much rather be an extraordinary family man with a good to great career versus an incredible career with an average family dynamic.

What do you do for a living? Specifically, for money. Your "day job" so to speak. What pays the bills?
