8 out of the top 12 recruits in that class are GONE. Justin Manning just decided to take a "leave of absence".... Something like 16 of the 32 recruits are not on the team anymore? What went wrong?

Of the 31 recruits who signed letters of intent:
5 have transferred
4 were kicked off the team (didn't even get a team vote)
2 have used up their eligibility and graduated
2 had to medically retire
1 is playing professional baseball
That's actually 14 of 31 (Manning is supposed to be back in the summer), not 16 of 32

Here's what happened: Sumlin got commits from a bunch of guys before the 2012 season started to get momentum going. No one could have known at the time we would have the great season we did. Some of those guys were reaches, and have become non contributors who are either buried in the depth chart or transferred. He also signed a few talented guys who were character risks (Golden, Claiborne, Miles) who couldn't stay out of trouble. We also had a highly recruited WR from Cali who transferred back to the west coast.
The good news is Sumlin learned from that class, and the 2014 class has shown enormous potential. 2015 could be just as good if not better. The bad news is that it set us back a year in terms of building the depth we need.

Don't forget that the 2013 class basically kicked OU out of Texas, recruiting wise.
