Actually I taught him for two years and yeah he is smart. Have you ever spoken to him? I doubt it, but it is easy to crack on a young man on the internet huh?

Kid always worked hard in everything he did. Had a bit of a chip on a shoulder but he needed given his situation. I am sure that is something he needs to overcome and a guy like Muschamp has the fire to motivate him and coach him up.

Anyway, back on topic, a nice article on Jason Smith.

LINK

quote:

"We're really trying to transition him into the wide receiver spot," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "He'll still have some type of package or role as far playing quarterback. We're still trying to find out what that is."

quote:

"Raw athleticism," tight end Chris Laye said. "He can do things that most other people can't do. But I think as he learns the plays and learns what he's supposed to do, I think he can be a huge asset to the team."

Smith appears to be Auburn's best option at quarterback in the Wildcat formation moving forward.

"We'll still have a package for him and we'll see how that goes," Malzahn said.

When did Chris Laye become an authority on everyone?

I was thinking the same thing. He's an odd choice for the go to voice of insight into the program.

He's probably the only one willing to answer questions.

Coaches letting the kid who doesn't know enough to blab about anything be the authority on how practice is going. Sounds genius

I mean, the kid has been here over a year now working/watching with the offense. I would think he could tell how good some of his teammates are.

Ricardo gave him praise in the same article.

When he was a freshmen I hung out with him a few times. Maybe he was just being a dumb FR but seemed like he lacked common sense. Friends that know him better don't disagree

To be fair though, smartest kid I know from Auburn also is a major dumbass 99% of the time

3* Safety prospect Spencer Perry said this about Tray Matthews & our secondary FWIW.
quote:

They have Tray Matthews now at safety and he's a really good player," Perry said. "He looked really good in practice. He showed out.

He's head and shoulders better than a lot of the other guys out there. He's just a helluva player. He's a beast.

post from "docdumpsta" on the bunker...some good insight into the coaches/team mindset...i love it

Just ran into my buddy of mine who coaches high school football. He took one of his players down to an Auburn practice before spring break. He's been to a lot of college practices and said the experience was AMAZING. He said he's never seen a tighter ship run at practice. A couple notes.

Gus run 24 five minute sessions at this particular practice. The speed of the practice is ridiculous.

Started practice with Oklahoma drill (Freakin Love this part), shift to a 7 on 7 drill and then shift to a bubble screen blocking and defense action.

Loudest guy on the field was GARNER, not BOOM.

Paid a lot of attention to Grimes. Said the guy is a legend in teaching the O-Line. He said from what he saw, the BODIES are there at offensive line but the new kids need a lot of live reps. Said they are getting a ton of reps in practice.

This particular buddy of mine is not an Auburn fan. He's not an Alabama fan either. He's in another state so he doesn't pay attention to what we do very much. I say this because he did not know a lot of the individual players.

He did say Jeremy was sharp.

He said by far the most impressive guy on Staff was BOOM. Evidently there is an all out assault to get linebackers down to Auburn and Boom ain't afraid to shout it out.

Buddy a mine sat in Gus and BOOM's office at length and said they were both Great. BOOM has put an assload a guys in the NFL and that is made very very clear.

He said he and the player made the trip back and he was at a track meet and his phone went. It was one of the coaches saying get that kids Momma and Daddy down here PRONTO!!!!

Wish I had more individual player stuff, but again, my buddy doesn't know our roster all that well. He just said it was a RIDICULOUSLY AMAZING experience to watch a practice at Auburn. Could not believe the speed and organization that went into the 24 periods of 5 minutes a piece.

I remember beign disappointed in hiring Grimes but the guy is legit. Everyone I have talked to said he just "gets it" on how to teach kids.

He also is hilarious. A couple Big Cats ago he had his group of recruits do White Goodman's "Purple Cobra" entrance

ETA: Fun Fact #2, JB loves his cat. Borders on creepy
