Tackles is the most overrated stat in all of FB...just means your defense has been on the field way too much and you had more oppurtunities to make a tackle...means little to nothing.

Know what happens when you don't tackle? Other team scores.

Or another LB,Safety or CB makes the tackle...once again, the most overrated stat in FB and perhaps in all of sports.

Sometimes the difference between having X tackles and X+1 tackles is winning and losing a game.

1. Andy Spiva Tennessee 547 1973-76

Spiva played side by side with one John Chavis. Great player, fierce competitor. Would have been a great player in the NFL if not struck down too young. R.I.P. Andy.

ETA- NFL reference.

A great defense will decrease tackle opportunities as well. The 2011 GOAT Alabama defense led the country in three-and-outs. That team was also insanely deep at every position. I don't think anyone eclipsed 80 tackles on that unit. This is all to say, total tackles CAN be a misleading statistic.
