Mars One is a non-profit group that wants to start a colony of people on Mars. 200,000 people applied, but the organization has narrowed the list of potential space explorers to 100.
quote:

Of the 100 finalists, only 24 people will be chosen to actually go to space. Lansdorp said four people will make the initial planned trip to Mars in 2024, followed by new crews every two years.
quote:

The group estimates that putting the first four people on Mars will cost $6 billion. Lansdorp said the revenue model centers around crowdfunding broadcasting deals and private investments.

That's one of those things where it'd have to be I had no family left on Earth and wasn't particularly social either.

ETA: Could you imagine being the spouse of one of those folks?

There's some woman here in Austin with a husband and kids who's a finalist.

I found her reasons to be kinda BS.

To further mankind. She said that's more important than her family

I agree with the sentiment, but not at the cost of my family. If the world were at stake like Interstellar, sure I get it. But this is just giving them up for the sake of exploration.

My question would be what reason wouldn't be totally selfish if you're leaving a spouse and kids behind?

I wouldn't go to Mars, but I'd love to be a pioneer of a planet similar to ours. No established government or anything..basically go and claim your land and start your own country. That'd be awesome

I think it'd be great if a group of scientists visited Mars but I really don't see a worthwhile contribution coming from the lay community.

After the first crew goes and dies fairly quickly the next crews will start to opt out

KXAN: “But you wouldn’t be coming back.” Van Meter: “I would not be coming back. That’s the catch. This is a one-way shot, and I’m OK with that … I think for me the biggest challenge is going to be figuring out how to say goodbye to my family. In the next 10 years I’m going to learn how to build a home from scratch on a dry, atmosphere-less, waterless rock, and those are all things that can be learned. The technology can be broken down and understood and explained. How I’m going to walk away from this extraordinary planet is going to be the big challenge.”

quote:

Van Meter’s husband of four years, Jason Stanford, supports her and not, he says, because he wants her to be 35 million miles away. “It’s perhaps not my first choice for her, but it’s her first choice for her and our marriage vows didn’t really come with an asterisk,” he said. “If she wants it, then I’m for it 100 percent

And a pussy husband.

God damn pussy.

Hey honey I'm gonna kill myself in a couple years leaving you and the kids.

Ok honey. I'm 100% behind that.
