Kind of like Warmack, no?

Dickson: 6'3", 260 lbs, 33 1/2" arms, 10" hands

Based off the measurements from Alabama's official athletics website, RollTide.com, DePriest (6'2", 250 lbs) comes in two inches shorter and four pounds heavier, while Dickson (6'3", 268 lbs) has lost weight since his time in Tuscaloosa.

slow and weak, only 17 bench reps. No wonder we couldn't run right this year

Knowing the playbook trumps all of that.

The bench press means nothing depending on arm length and other factors. There have been high picks with abysmal bench numbers like that(I.E. Clowney with 21).

Bench press has a great deal to do with upper body strength.

For a guy his size/weight, 17 is kinda weak.

There are WRs who do 20+ reps. 17 for an OL is pretty unimpressive IMO. Bench press isn't the end all be all but it is a data point teams will take note of

The bench press doesn't have to do with strength in this environment. It has more to do with endurance if anything. If they really cared so much about it then they would be stressing proper form as well but they largely ignore poor form. Here's some of the lower reps that defensive lineman have registered in the draft;

Robert Quinn- 22
Chandler Jones- 22
Von Miller- 21
Jadeveon Clowney- 21
Greg Hardy- 21
Aldon Smith- 20
Jason Pierre Paul- 19
Tamba Hali- 18
Trent Cole- 15
Jared Allen- 13

Hell, many of you seem to be forgetting that Fluker only put up 21. Nfl teams rarely give a damn about the bench press nor is it ever an indicator of success.

Almost all of the lower rep examples you cited were higher than AS further illustrating how badly he did. And why did you choose DL? Wouldn't other OL be more apples to apples?

If you're regarded as a sure-fire future NFL stud, a poor performance on bench isn't going to really change teams' opinion of you. If you're a middle of the pack guy like AS though it could definitely affect your placement on teams' boards.

It's an old example I had bookmarked from a year ago. Here's some solid lineman from the past few years with bad results;

Ricky Wagner, starting RT for the Ravens-20

Travis Frederick, All Rookie center(started every game) for the Cowboys-21

Peter Konz, Starting center for the Falcons before IR,-18

Bobby Massie, starting tackle for the Cardinals-22

James Carpenter-23

Nate Solder, lineman for the Patriots,-21

These are just some guys going back the past few years that have had lackluster bench reps and been very good throughout their career. Also keep in mind that not everyone partakes in it and some of them have their arms as an excuse(I.E. Nate Solder) whereas both Wisconsin players don't despite anchoring a VERY strong running game. Shepherd has a more comparable frame to the centers and guards than he does tackle. That being said his 17 reps is a bit below par for these examples.

This is true. My main issue is putting the blame of the line on a guy who allowed no sacks until Oklahoma during 2013 and played sparingly well out of position(he doesn't fit the prototypical tackle at all) is just plain wrong. He's always been a solid run blocker his entire career and bench press reps aren't going to change that.

nobody hates AS. He was really pretty good in pass pro. He just was a huge step down in the run game from fluker so it stands out in people's minds, especially when he performs at the bottom of almost every category at the combine. Center through right tackle on this year's line were just weak (by our standards) in the run game, lacked the ability to get tough yards when we needed them and the meanness/toughness that we had on the line 2008-2012. No hate, just the way it was. We are all hoping to see some more grit
