Except one baseball (in the 50s) and one track??

I mean seriously in every sport, Mizzou against all odds always sucks and embraces mediocrity, losing in big games. It is appalling. Anyone remember Norfolk State?

WOW what an embarrassing tradition of mediocrity.

That was only a conference championship. They went undefeated and then lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Classic Mizzou

Even Vanderbilt has won a couple recently. One in bowling and last year in baseball

They are overdue. I don't know if they win the team title this year but I expect them to be in contention for individual titles in wrestling.

The thing is Mizzou has always been sort of the Oliver Twist of big time college sports. Poor and asking for "A little more please". They have had really good football and basketball teams here and there, but never really put the money into developing a major sports program.

Now they are one of those boats being lifted by the rising tide of the SEC revenue. Suddenly the good coaches, the expanded recruiting area, the top notch facilities... all those things are starting to fall into place for them. With them will come more wins. With more wins comes a bigger fanbase. Twenty years from now they should be dangerous in a variety of sports.

Didn't they have a University president in the 70s and 80s that pretty much tried to kill Mizzou as a major sports program?

I've seen her name mentioned on here before. I don't know exactly what she did though.

Barbara Uehling ruined any momentum Mizzou had built up previous to her arrival. Wanted to turn Mizzou into the Harvard of the Midwest.

I don't like to use it as an excuse, because that's exactly what it is...an excuse. However, yes. This happened. Her name was Barbara Uehling (sarcastically/affectionately referred to as "Babs" by Mizzou fans) and her goal was an extreme emphasis on academics at Mizzou at the cost of the athletics program. Think "public ivy" aspirations...she wanted Mizzou to be like Cal-Berkeley or Virginia. Short story, this obviously failed and she moved on/we parted ways with her.

Basketball was able to sustain success, as this is fairly common among schools who emphasize academics (see Vanderbilt or UCLA), but football suffered. Between rigorous admission policies for athletes and bad coaching hires, Mizzou football tanked for 2 solid decades.

That doesn't excuse all of the other secondary sports for never winning a national title in 50 years, but it helps explain the 20 or so years through the 80's and 90's that set back Mizzou athletics which we are just now recovering from.
