Since Rivals began ranking classes in 2002, every team who won the national title had at least 1 top 5 class on their roster that season.

Oregon has none

Ohio State has 3 (2012-2014)

Oregon was the first team to make the championship game without a recruiting class of X rank or averaged X rank.

If Oregon wins, the bar will be moved and twisted to what "has to occur" to win. You will probably see ESPN tout their 250 recruits, the other services will take some form of ranking number and say "have to have it, here's the proof".

Lies, Damned Lies, and recruiting statistics.

Actually, Notre Dame was the first without a top 5 class.

Oregon is the first without a top ten.

Notre Dame won a national title without a top 5 class? When is the last time they won? I'm sure they had a good class back then.

Hence the X because I really don't care, just remember it was talked about Oregon was the first without top 10 or 15 or whatever it was.

Before that it was "have to have higher than X ranked classes".

Its a sliding scale that doesn't really show correlation or the scale would not have to be slid.

Fact is if you recruit well enough to win a power 5 conference, you are recruiting well enough to win a NC, there are way more variables in getting into the playoff (and NCG before) than recrooting rankins.

I believe many would say TCU has recruited well over the past decade or so based on results, but you couldn't make this claim based on their ranking.

Meanwhile you had a team like Texas who was recruiting well according to the rankins who put an absolute garbage product on the field at the same time and found themselves lacking in talent, happened to Miami before them. It is more important to get guys who fit and will excel in your system/program than the amount of stars put next to their name by a website.

Hey remember when you said Baylor had absolutely no chance of winning in Norman?

The fact that Art Briles had never won a road game vs. a ranked opponent in his career prior to that was a compelling reason. He still doesn't have a road win over a team who finished in the top 25.

Stats are fun.

What you just did to discredit Bryles is what Recruiting sites/services do to credit themselves.

Pick the stat, move the bar, claim as a definitive and the only way, sell subscriptions, profit.

thing is, according to "the trend", Oregon should not even be there, they do not belong, they are barely a top 20 recruiting team.

While I don't really like Oregon, I wouldn't mind seeing the underdog or underduck winning this one.

As Mizzou fans, with a team that might start approaching the top 20 this year again, it gives us hope..

Congratulations on Briles first (and only) road win over a ranked team.

Meanwhile, Kevin Sumlin has FOUR road wins over top 10 opponents on the road as a head coach.

Bryles has a couple conference championships, how many does Sumlin have?

One coach is 2-6 in bowls, the other 4-1.

R.C. Slocum has more conference championships than Les Miles. Does that make him a better coach?

Even without 5-stars, I can't see Oregon losing to OSU. Their offense is a juggernaut.

Yeah five stars or not, I see Oregon walking away with this one. They run the ball well. Alabama was gashing tOSU with the run. Mariota is a great quarterback and rarely gets rattled.
