We like to rag on Georgia for perennially coming up short but just imagine how different 21st century SEC football could be to this point if Saban had stayed at Michigan State one more season and been offered and accepted the Georgia head coaching vacancy.

Would Georgia have afforded Saban the resources he had at LSU to return Georgia to powerhouse status?

Saban has had an enormous impact on the SEC while coaching in the league for 13 seasons. Ranters, can you even fathom how things might stand today if Saban had waited a year and landed at UGA instead?

I can't say anything with certainty because this is a hypothetical. However,

1. Saban may not have developed into as great of a coach as he is today.
2. I doubt LSU would have been as consistent in the 15 years since their firing of DiNardo. LSU had the talent but lacked the coaching with DiNardo to become a national contender.
3. LSU fans wouldn't harbor resentment towards Saban for his "betrayal".
4. Alabama may never have landed him either.
5. If he enjoyed the job, Saban would at least have accomplished what Richt did his first several seasons if not more since LSU might not have been a factor.
6. Tennessee might be in better straits.
7. The conference as a whole would be worse off.

I'm not sure how you arrive to the conclusion in #1

If Nick Saban ever signed to coach at Georgia UGA, a damn good dog who hates evil trolls, would jump up and bite off his penis.

Before making claims, I stated that nothing could be said with certainty.

There's no telling how long he would have stayed at Georgia, who'd he have lost to, and how he would have developed? Does he still take a shot at the NFL? If so, which team? There are too many questions to answer. This thread is just an exercise in imagination.

100% yes. He flirted with the NFL for 3 years before he finally left. It was always his goal.

History is like a web. Removing one thread can have major consequences. I was under the impressions that the NFL was Saban's dream. Thanks for confirming that.

Now one must consider that Saban may have landed in a more favorable or worse situation that he inherited at Miami. If it's more favorable, he might have stayed in the NFL. If it's worse, he'd return to college.

If he enjoys great success in the NFL, then he certainly would be a very good coach, but how would the SEC be affected if he never returned?

Saban would have won about the same as Richt from 01-05. However, Saban would not have stayed very long once he realized that his program building philosophy was not embraced by the tight wads and penny punchers running our AD. He would have moved on to a program that would provide him with the resources he knew he needed to win NCs.

LSU missed Spurrier by a week or so.

ETA: The second time.

First time we missed him by leaving him with the tj ribs bill.

When he was at MSU, he definitely had issues with admin with the same mindset. One of the big things that he didn't like, so he left for LSU. The NFL, ultimately, was what he was shooting for. He considered going for the Bears/Giants jobs in the late 90s.

Georgia is not committed to winning on that level.

All of these hypotheticals are crazy. You act like Saban would have had the same or more success anywhere he landed. I don't think that's the case. Timing and sequence is a big thing too. I honestly don't think Saban succeeds at LSU without having coached at Michigan State and especially at Alabama without having put in time at LSU.

He wouldn't have forged a relationship with NCAA President ME paving the way for an unincumbered process allowing the talent base to accrue to the point he knows today.
