The day after losing to t.u. in 2009, we fired Joe Kines as DC.

It took until January 21 for us to hire Tim DeRuyter after most of the defensive players we had began falling away.

Not really. That was a different HC with a different AD.

You really think Hyman > Byrne?

Same donors, same BoR.

Yup.

Besides, wasn't DeRuyter one of the original targets? I remember everyone liking his hire. Its too bad he only got 2 years.

He became a head coach as a result. He might have been retained under Sumlin.

Yeah I remember people wanted to give him the job Sherm vacated. I will also always remember him fondly for that bowl win, as it started a bowl winning streak.

You really need to stop trying to apply things from different regimes to this one.

I'm sorry but it's silly to act like Hyman and Sumlin = Byrne and Sherman.

DeRuyter wasn't a bad coach, but for all of Dat Nguyen's accolades, ILB play under him was putrid.

I still remember Garrick Williams giving up 3-4 Arkansas TD by himself in the 2011 game.

We are forcing all competition to give their DCs a raise. So there's that.

Exactly. There is quite the silver lining in all this that if we end up with a yawn hire at the very least we will be in a better position financially than a lot of the rest of the west to make a big move in a few years.

I just don't get how that benefits Sumlin.

When you look at the top defenses:

It is obvious that the first "open" candidates on that list would lead us to fight with Memphis/Mizzou over their coach, or "settle" for Gibbs. The fact that those options aren't good enough for Sumlin, and that he is trying to shake the more solid trees in that top 25 kinda tells me where he feels he stands.
