You know what's sad though? Some portion of our fanbase (we have a lot old people who think drankin's a sin) will call for that. Of course, they'll be ignored and they are the minority but it's still kinda pathetic.

Couldn't be farther from upset. Jalen's playing. Thrilled our coaches understand this is an absurd thing to get in trouble over.

Gotta say tho' you do sound upset no one's truly upset.

Hate to admit it but you may be right. Jalen and Butch may even need to be sentenced to LWOP tho execution wouldn't be out of order for this. The only way to deal with such a heinous crime.

I don't disagree. IIRC, our President signed on to a pretty big push by college presidents across the nation pushing to lower the drinking age to 18 for college students. There's good indication it could actually help things -- lower binge drinking, impact binge drinking culture as well as change attitudes/willingness to call 9/11 when underage students need help and many other things. They had tons of research behind them that supported the issue.

What kills me isn't that something like that won't pass but that it won't even be debated seriously or even considered because MADD has one of the largest budgets and most powerul lobbying groups in DC.

That said, even their founder (who lost her child to drunk driving) has disowned them saying that they're no longer about awareness and saftery but rather a neo-prohibitionist and have strayed far and wide from their initial mission. They're riding high on good PR and past good deeds. But lest we forget this same group lobbied against GTA because according to them it promoted 'drinking and driving.'

Folks know mostly about their good deeds and they def. have plenty and they deserve props for them too but few know about what they've become and the absurd laws they've pushed for. GREAT PR buys them a lot of sway with the public as well.

Umm... my OP was laced with sarcasm. Sorry that wasn't clear (thought it was but I guess not).

I think underage drinking is the most common thing eva and think it's absurd anyone gets much hassle over it, especially those who reach 18 and are considered adults in every other legal scenario. Don't drive and I got no problem (same w/adults).

IOW, I don't think you're a tPOS at all. Just incredibly normal.

Think he's calling you defensive cause you started the thread and are explaining in great detail why the underage drinking law is bogus when most, if not all, people know how dumb and prevalent it is.

If you give people an opportunity to troll, they will take it.

That was later tho. My tangent about MADD came in a respone to him after he said we seemed upset. Later he just repeated that same troll by claiming I seemed upset. But I can see how people might get see it that way if that's all they saw. Even so it's still my opinion and I've mentioned it in other thread here too. For example, it pisses me off the the major role MADD played in making sure the UT-UK Keg went away for good rather than just went on hiatus to honor those who died in an unrelated but deadly accident involving alcohol just days before the game. The keg/beer barrel survived prohibition for frick's sake.

I want the keg back and want it back now and have made no secret of that. It's well past time. The dead have been honored.

I never heard of the UT-UK Keg before. School admins tend to overreact in a CYA move. It's dumb cause it doesn't really serve any purpose but yet they will keep that restriction in perpetuity.

The outgoing (thankfully) UF prez was really gung ho on alcohol policies on campus and in Gville. Fricked up gameday atmosphere and arrested a lot of people (especially visitors) for dumb open container laws. Arrested an LSU fan who tried to be courteous to another person by walking with a foot on the sidewalk. Boom-open container arrest. And that's just one I've heard of. There are PLENTY more every gameday.

In a few years people will look back at these underage drinking and possession of marijuana charges and wonder WTF were they thinking?

Oh I agree with you on many levels. Here's the info of the keg (also more formally called the beer barrel) via wiki despite it leaving a lot out you ought to be able to get the gist:

quote:

Like many college football rivalries, the Kentucky–Tennessee game once involved a trophy: a wooden beer barrel painted half blue and half orange which was awarded to the winner of the game every year from 1925 to 1997. The Barrel was introduced in 1925 by a group of former Kentucky students who wanted to create a material sign of their school's supremacy in the rivalry. It was rolled onto the field that year with the words "Ice Water" painted on it to avoid any outcries over an alcohol drum symbolizing a college rivalry during the Prohibition era.

It's always been the keg or just plain barrel to me and while it's been stated and is a part of offficial history it was a beer keg. I honestly believe it was was a whiskey/bourbon barrel/keg but the similarities to what a beer barrel/keg and whiskey keg/barrel looked like were lost. Beer makes zero sense given our histories.

Fun fact: while the trophy eventually went solely to football it was exchanged for ages both in basketball and football. UK/UT has always been a two-sport rivalry. Also, the winners got to write the outcome it but had to give it back as soon as the other team won.

Even though we dominated on the gridiron, football was more fun with the keg/barrel trophy on the line. Games were just better.

Currently on sabbatical but yes, I've taught at major uni's both public and Ivy and am an academic. That said, I don't have full professorship at present - THAT takes time these days, esp. in my field. Unis hate giving that out as it is a bigger payday and they'd rather hire lecturers and low grade PhD's fresh out of school and desperate to keep costs low.

And despite my typo-itis that rears its head at times (aometimes wayyyyyy more than other times) I do know how to construct a sentence. I am however lazy online (I realized years ago I was spending up to an hour grammar/typo checking and taught myself to let to allow typos to stand because of that. FWIW, I'm far more anal retentive about checking sources/double checking but even moreso regarding typos on various things when it's a more serious topic butt even in foosball I can't help but double-check

lol... awesome. I figured so, hence the name. But was unsure because of the typos, lol. Apologies for my abject prejudice. What's your area of study? I'm considering going back to get a PhD or JD shortly, I'd like to teach as well at some point, or at least lecture(more apologies) a class every semester. Where are you now?

I've just wondered why they don't change it from "Battle for the Beer Barrel" to "Battle for the Barrel."

Seems like a simple way to solve the problem
