I usually see Matich as a blabbering idiot, but he makes a fair point here. How do you KNOW conferences are better without the top teams playing each other? When we classify “best,” we are using bias’ and personal opinion. I particularly liked his statement about making the regular season mean something, having the wins that mean you are the conference champion. How can you be best in the nation, if you aren’t best in your division or conference.

Thoughts?

Fair point. However, there are some common opponents every year by which we can make some meaningful comparisons between conferences.

Why can't you be one of the best 4 teams in the country if you didn't win your conference/division if your conference division was won by the best team in the country?

Like it or not, conferences are not equal. You should try to compare team A versus team B based on their entire resume. If Team A and Team B are in different conferences, than winning a conference really should be fairly far down the list when comparing those two teams.

I judge who's the best by using the eyeballs in my head.

Well lsu played the potential big 10 champ and won. Lsu is a 4th-6th place team in the sec west. Now we know sec west > big 10. State > osu

Eh, I think you can get a pretty good grasp based on cased played by conference teams against evenly matched (in each's conference) teams in other conferences. And the SEC, both at the start of the year, the end of the year and the bowl season, routinely proves to win those games more than they lose them. Almost all other conferences lose more than they win. Just this year already.

Alabama over WVU
Auburn over Kansas State
Arkansas over Texas Tech
LSU over Wisconsin
Georgia over Clemson

And down the stretch we have Georgia-Georgia Tech, Florida-Florida State, UK-UL and Clemson-USCe. The last 3 are 3 of the bottom 10 SEC teams against 3 of the top 4 or 5 ACC teams, and UGA and GT are both in the top of their leagues.

The only real blemish so far on the SEC's resume is the Mizzou-Indiana game. Not many other conferences can say that in terms of their top 6 or 7 teams.

He went to BYU. I wonder what he would say if they went undefeated one year.

I mostly agree with what everyone is saying, but, it still brings up some good discussion, considering none of the top teams in each conference have played. Do I think State is one of the best 4 teams in the country, probably, but what is to say that TCU or Baylor isn't just as good?

For all the talk about the Big 10 being awful, the ACC is absolutely worse. They seem to get a pass based on one team, which is ridiculous. I'd put Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Mich St. against the 2nd best team in the ACC and watch them go 3-0.

At the end of the day, I hope the 4 teams that get in are clear cut.
