Muschamp is known as a GREAT Defense Coach/Coordinator in college football. He has the hardware and stats to back it up. I wanted to put together a research thread to illustrate just how good his defense stats/rankings have been as a DC/HC.
My data was compiled from ncaa.com and for the sake of time, I'm just going to list National Rankings for Total Defense and Scoring Defense.
2014 - UF (HC)
20th - Total Defense
34th - Scoring Defense
2013 - UF (HC)
5th - Total Defense
5th - Scoring Defense
2012 - UF (HC)
8th - Total Defense
20th - Scoring Defense
2011 - UF (HC)
9th - Total Defense
29th - Scoring Defense
2010 - Texas (DC)
6th - Total Defense
49th - Scoring Defense
2009 - Texas (DC)
3rd - Total Defense
12th - Scoring Defense
2008 - Texas (DC)
51st - Total Defense
18th - Scoring Defense (also #3 in Rush Defense, #1 in Sacks, and #19 in TFL.)
2007 - Auburn (DC)
6th - Total Defense
6th - Scoring Defense
2006 - Auburn (DC)
19th - Total Defense
7th - Scoring Defense
2005 - Miami Dolphins NFL (DC)
15th out of 32 - Total Defense
18th out of 32 - Scoring Defense
2004 - LSU (DC)
3rd - Total Defense
14th - Scoring Defense
2003 - LSU (DC)
1st - Total Defense
1st - Scoring Defense
2002 - LSU (DC)
8th - Total Defense
15th - Scoring Defense
2001 - LSU (LB Coach) - so omitting this data
2000 - Valdosta State - Division II - (DC)
14th - Total Defense
2nd - Scoring Defense
If you look at the AVERAGE Total Defense and Scoring Defense for the 14 years (2001 omitted b/c he was just an LB Coach):
12th - Total Defense Avg Ranking
16th - Scoring Defense Avg Ranking
If you look at the AVERAGE Total Defense and Scoring Defense for the 9 years he was a College DC:
12th - Total Defense Avg Ranking
13th - Scoring Defense Avg Ranking
Also, he has a really impressive Yards Per Play average/ranking throughout his career.
UF 2014 - 4.5 ypp; 13th; (HC)
UF 2013 - 5.0 ypp; 27th; (HC)
UF 2012 - 4.2 ypp; 4th; (HC)
UF 2011 - 4.3 ypp; 6th; (HC)
UT 2010 - 4.6 ypp; 12th; (DC)
UT 2009 - 3.7 ypp; 1st; (DC)
UT 2008 - 5.0 ypp; 49th; (DC)
AU 2007 - 4.4 ypp; 11th; (DC)
AU 2006 - 4.7 ypp; 29th; (DC)
LSU 2004 - 4.0 ypp; 2nd; (DC)
LSU 2003 - 3.9 ypp; 1st; (DC)
LSU 2002 - 4.5 yard per play; Couldn't find the ranking though; (DC)
That means his AVERAGE Yards Per Play from '02-'14 was 4.4
That means his AVERAGE Yards Per Play from '02-'14 (excluding '02) is 14th.
Furthermore, his Points Per Play against FBS Competition is really good:
UF 2014 - 0.315 ppp; 31st (HC)
UF 2013 - 0.337 ypp; 41st (HC)
UF 2012 - 0.227 ppp; 7th (HC)
UF 2011 - 0.289 ppp; 18th (HC)
UT 2010 - 0.356 ppp; 49th; (DC)
UT 2009 - 0.244 ppp; 11th (DC)
UT 2008 - 0.274 ppp; 14th (DC)
AU 2007 - 0.266 ppp; 12th (DC)
AU 2006 - 0.266 ppp; 8th (DC)
LSU 2004 - 0.264 ppp; 17th (DC)
LSU 2003 - 0.172 ppp; 1st (DC)
For the 11 seasons he was HC or DC with this data we see that his AVERAGE Points Per Play against FBS Competition was .273, and his AVERAGE Ranking for Points Per Play was 19th. His AVG would be even better if we just looked at his DC years and didn't include his HC years.
Tons of DC's have up and down years, however, Muschamp's overall track record and rankings are ELITE. He's absolutely in the conversation with that top echelon of college DC's, with Smart and Chavis.

Yet we still won't hire him because Spurrier is set in his ways. Think about this, even with our shite Defense and Fertada DC. If Spurrier ran Cooper, Davis, Wilds and Williams the entire 4th quarter and sat DT. Learning his lesson after Mizzou. We'd be 8-2 and thats a fact. With Muschamp disciplining this D which he would overnight. We'd be a 2/3 loss team at worst next season.
As is we'll have Wammy walking around in his Affliction shirts and bedazzled jeans playing pretend. If you don't know what I'm talking about you should see Wammy out of the office. The dude looks like he works at The Buckle at the Jersey Shore Mall for gods sake.
Also I'd love for you to do this for Wammy's record. And I appreciate you taking the time to do this for Boom. I was wondering if his DC record was fact or fiction.

I'll run Whammy's numbers later. Before this season, they were really good, but even then, not on Muschamp's level. With this season, it won't even be close. I did a statistical comparison of Whammy's first 3 years as DC vs Venables career last year, so I should be able to find and use most of that data.
Also, it's my pleasure to do this, I like researching stats and such. I'm a big proponent of the Bill Parcells mantra of You Are What Your Record Says You Are. I believe it holds true for coordinator and stats as well. Over time, you can see just how good any Coordinator is by averaging out their stats.
