My Dad use to drive me to school every morning in an old beat-up Ford truck that could barely run (it was all that we could afford).

One morning on the way to school, this kid wearing an Ole Miss cap started to throw rocks at our truck. The next morning, there were more.

Weeks went by and every morning, a group of Ole Miss fans, wearing their Ole Miss t-shirt and other apparel, would congregate on this one corner and throw rocks at our beat-up truck.

We couldn't avoid them. We called the police and they would simply reply with "Hotty Toddy" and hang up.

One morning, as usual, the pack of rabid rebel fans were out on the corner with rocks in hand. My father attempted to accelerate the truck to avoid the confrontation, but alas the truck had died and was at a standstill.

The onslaught began. Small rocks, large rocks, hammers and wrenches. Anything that these Ole Miss fans could throw, they pelted our truck with. My father and I, terrified, leaped into the floorboard as the windshields began to shatter.

As tears filled my eyes and I began to sob, my father grabbed my shoulder and said softly, "Don't cry. You're a bulldog and bulldogs don't cry."

My Dad reached for the door handle, as I pleaded for him to not go. The sound of rocks slamming into the truck were even louder. Before he opened the door and left, he looked back at me, tears in his eyes and softly said, "Maroon. White."

After half an hour, the assault finally tapered off and I never saw my father again.
