I say no.

Example: east Carolina, Utah, Arizona state. All are ranked in the top 20. If those 3 played Arky on a neutral field would all or any actually be favored to win? If not, then are they ranked too high considering Arky is not close to the top 25 and might not crack the top 20 even if they upset a top 10 team right now.

Nope. We are trying to use the NCAA basketball model. Well the NCAA has used RPI as a major factor which covers SOS. We have got to find a quantifiable number like RPI for this to work properly and result in no bias.

May not be a problem with only 4 teams though.

Arkansas could obliterate UGA 100-0 and wouldnt even be closed to ranked.

I think both Utah and East Carolina would stand a good chance of beating Arky on a neutral field. Hell, Utah just beat UCLA and ECU just beat Va Tech and UNC. Whether they would be favored, I do not know. I'm not an oddsmaker.

The season is too fluid to give weight to the rankings. A&M's win @ top 10 S. Carolina looked impressive, now we know that wasn't a big deal after all.

I've never understood the concerns about rankings this early in the season, especially this year with that damn committee.

We're #1 so, yeah! But seriously, I think the committee will rely more on a SOS estimate or calculation when it really matters at the end to select 1 through 4. I would hope so anyway. It might actually work against us but only if it's us vs another SEC school competing for a spot in the final deal. Even with our weak OOC schedule, surviving in the SEC will stand up against any non SEC school in the country.

I'd say if Bert is ranked #1 in weight and Saban is ranked #14, I'd put SOS somewhere around 8th.

The problem is it's hard to quantify. SOS only matters for high quality opponents. If you're a top 10 team, it doesn't matter if you played #35 or #110, the result and difficulty is the same. I would agree that maybe SOS against top 25-30 opponents only would be a good thing to put more weight behind. But as far as SEC teams, nobody cares if you played Texas or Tulane, the relative strength of opponent is the same.
