I liberated this from another site.

Well, we all know how bad it looked Saturday night, but let's go to the numbers to see where we stand vs. the rest of the country. Per the NCAA stats, our "special" teams are ranked:

Kickoff Coverage: #123 of 125 teams. Not surprising based on what we've seen, but just terribad given the talent we have to work with. I can't imagine how Kent and Troy are worse unless they are blindfolded. Oh, and no other team has given up 2 KOR TDs this season, let alone 2 in one game.

Kickoff Returns: #58. Solid "meh", buoyed by Shon's uncharacteristic returns vs. UGA. Vandy catapults to #19 nationally after their track meet Saturday night.

Net Punting: #29. Solid, 40.4 yard average. Hull has been better/more consistent this year.

Punt Return D: #19. Pretty good, helped out tremendously by Hull's improvement.

Punt Returns: T-#113. Again, awful.

Blocked kicks: T-#9 with 2. Not bad, and we should have had another vs. Vandy with that guy's line-drives.

Report card 1/3 way through the season: Feels like it should be an "F" after Saturday night, but Fry and Hull help JoeRob dodge it for now. D-

You now have SOS looking hard over your shoulder, JoeRob. Get it together or get your resume together.

We were near last in all these stats last season.

We had a HUGE improvement in Net Punting and Punt Return Defense. I mean around we moved up about 80 spots in the rankings over last year. That's great, really impressive job with that. Hull got the message this offseason.

We areT-#9 with 2 blocked FG's, that's huge, really impressive, those blocks were by different players as well.

Kickoff Return is #58, we were in the 100's last year. This is greatly attributed to BETTER DECISION MAKING. If the ball is kicked 5 yards deep in the endzone, take a knee, don't run it out to get tackled at the 18 yd line like last year, or worse fumble. Take that FREE 25 yards on the touchback. I just think we need to stay the course we are on now in this aspect.

Kickoff Return wasn't bad until Saturday night. We were actually outgaining our opponents in KO Return until the Vandy game by about 4 yards on average. We WERE doing well, and then the wheels came off. We did AWESOME in this against uga, but then....

Punt Return is odd. I think I see the problem though. We aren't jamming the gunners for shite. at the line. Also, we're so engaged with trying to stop fake punts on the line and our guys are avoiding contact that the interior guys are getting down the field at our PR man. We have to start blocking better, we aren't doing even an average job at that now.

Not sure how this would affect us but does PR only count punts that we actually try to return? Does it count fair catches as well?

I believe all punt returns are counted. We are returning several for some good yardage...in the rare moment we actually force a punt.

We need to keep improving. Let's not dwell on the first third of the season too much ... rather, let's hope we keep improving and eventually catch fire at the right time.

So every time there is a fair catch it adds a 0 into the average? Not saying that sways our number. If I recall a few of our returners chose not to fair catch and got blasted immediately.

OK, I actually looked it up, a fair catch does NOT count towards the Punt Return average.

A fair catch doesn't count as a return, b/c there is no actual return and the play is dead once the catch is made (as long as there's no fumble.)

Cooper has 3 PR's for 6 yards, that's a 2 yard avg and why we are 113th in the nation. The national average is 8.8 yards.

Hypothetically, if we took 1 punt next game for 60 yards, we could jump into the Top 20. Almost all the teams in the Top 10 for PR have a PR for a TD.

We were 9th in the nation with Ace in '12. 14.23 yards per PR avg.

There's a kid from NC, Nyheim Hines, I would like to see SC pick him up just for his Spec Team return abilities. He's fast and one of the most elusive HS guys I've seen, he has Ace's agility/shiftiness, but his acceleration and top end speed is faster. .
