With that ugly game behind us Auburn fans, I'd like to take the time to repost this Bill Snyder Appreciation thread. Bill Snyder through his meticulous game planning, coaching genius and ability brought a team full of JUCOs and walkons to a near monumental upset. Snyder seemed to have Gus Malzahn's offense figured out which is something no coaching staff has been able to accomplish thus far in the Malzahn era.

Bill Snyder: An All Time Great

While we often talk about the best coaches in the country on this board and frequently see different names like Saban, Spurrier and Malzahn thrown around from the SEC, there is a coach from the Big 12 that never gets the appreciation that he deserves outside of Manhattan, Kansas, Bill Snyder. The man who truly does the most with the least. (Kansas recruiting blows)

Going into next year, I am excited most (to see the game not go to Kansas) to travel out to Kansas and meet up with the Wildcats just to see this legend in what may be one of his last years

Prior to Snyder's first season in 1989, Sports Illustrated published an article about Kansas State football entitled " Futility U," which labeled the school "America's most hapless team.
The previous 3 seasons of Kansas State resulted in no wins and put them on par with Arkansas as far as programs go.

Previous 13 Kansas State Coaches Record

137-393-17 for a win % of 0.266

In Bill Snyder's 3rd Year, Snyder led the Wildcats to only their 3rd winning season in nearly 30 years.

In year 5, Snyder led the Kansas State Wildcats to only their second 9+ win in the history of the program and first since 1910. This 9+ win would start one of the more impressive streaks of wins in college history. Kansas State under Bill Snyder would win 9 or more games for 8 straight years and 10 of 11 which includes six 11 win seasons. Additionally, Kansas State, who had enver finished a season ranked previously, would finished the season ranked in the top 20 each year of 9+ wins during this streak.

After a single down year, Bill Snyder led KState to another couple 11 win seasons along with a few more down years before retiring.

After Kansas State made a disastrous hire following Bill Snyder's retirement, Bill Snyder was lured back at the age of 70 to head a program. Snyder has lead the Wildcats back to 4 straight bowl games and 2 10+ win season.

The guy truly is a great coach and deserves the SEC Rant's recognition despite never coaching in this conference

Dude is definitely one of the greats. If he had won a couple of titles in the 90s with those great K-State teams, then he would be considered up there.

If I'm picking the top five coaches in college football. He's the only non-SEC one on my list.

My list:
Saban
Spurrier
Miles
Malzahn
Snyder

I'm glad y'all got to experience the Purple Magic first hand last night they rope you in to those ugly arse games and never let go. Congrats on y'all for escaping with a W.

People will hate all over Auburn today on this board and I had some fun last night but judging K State games by the score isn't fair, all that matters is the win

I would think Art Briles should be given consideration if he can continue to produce at Baylor.

Also, as much as I hate to say it Urban Meyer should be considered as well

Wait until Ohio State finishes 7-5 this year and get back to me. Meyer is a better Chizik. He looks better because of one great player, usually a QB.

Josh Harris, Alex Smith, Chris Leak/Tim Tebow, Braxton Miller.

He doesn't have a QB at Ohio State this year like he didn't his last year at Florida - and they'll be average .. like his last year at Florida.

This type of thinking always infuriates me. You listed like five QBs over four schools, at some point the coach deserves at least a little bit of credit for developing great QBs or a system where QBs can excel

Oh I don't disagree, but he was successful at Utah and everywhere else. The win percentage, even when considering the talent level he is dealing with, is impressive as shite.

I wouldn't put Urban Meyer as a top 5 but it would be remiss to ignore him

He is a great coach and a great man. He reminds me a lot of Coach Bryant.

Leak, Tebow, Braxton Miller were all 5* top 25 type players. He deserves credit for having none of them bust sure but not necessarily for developing them.

His Utah stuff, as I mentioned is what is the most impressive to me. Guy earned his keep there and continued everywhere else by dominating every year but 1

Snyder never has all the top notch 4 and 5 star recruits, but every year he puts out a very well coached team that can play with anybody.

That is what is unbelievable. They have solid bowl records, consistently win games against top Big XII opponents and never seem to have mental lapses. Clearly indicitive of the caliber of coaching

Always thought Snyder was a great coach, people don't realize how bad KSate was historically and will probably be after he is gone.

His offense has always been kind of ugly but he's changed the looks as the game has evolved too. They run so much out of the pistol and shotgun now, but they used the I a lot in the late 90s early 2000s. They use the same principles with a lot of misdirection and utilizing the QB as another ball carrier, but the looks have completely adapted to the modern era. A lot of other older coaches let the game pass them by

So you're saying he's developed great college QBs

Bill Snyder is a freaking GIANT in the history of college football. As a CU ticket holder in the 90's I was able to see up close what he did with that program, and it was damn near impossible. To minimize his achievements even a little, is the height of ignorance.

I've always felt the coaching tree is another interesting way to look at a coach's legacy. Here is the Wizard's from coachingroots.com

Good post. As a Mizzou fan, I hated to see them fire Ron Prince and rehiring Grandpa Bill. Guy is a crazy good coach. Fun Fact: Bill Snyder was a Quarterback for Mizzou on the Mizzou freshman team and ended up flunking out.
